Next Sunday is Mother's Day. And I know everyone is divided into two groups: you've either been planning to do something spectacular, or you haven't one idea what to do yet. That's okay, because I'm here to help.
I'm the more creative one in my family, so when it's Mother's Day or my mom's birthday, my brothers, along with my dad, look to me to guide them in the direction for celebrating the day. I've come up with pretty cool ideas in the past and then some that were more complicated than they should have been. There have been years where I had no money (because college...) so I had to improvise. But there have also been times when I spent a large sum to make sure mom had the best day she could ever dream of.
So, I've compiled a list of a few of the ideas that have worked amazingly well for me to hopefully inspire those of you who are still planning this special day for mom.
1. Spa Day
You can't go wrong with a spa day. Moms have the hardest job in the world. They are the ones who do everything and think of everything. The cooking. The cleaning. They handle the household and it's no where near as easy as most people think it is. Sometimes, they're so tired that they stop caring about their hair being messy or that shirt having a million stains on it. They have so much other stuff that's occupied their minds. So, pamper mom with massages and facials and pedicures and whatnot.
And if this isn't in your budget, you can do a "home spa day" instead. I've bought masks and all the materials for a manicure and pedicure and my brothers took turns giving massages while I gave her a facial and my dad cooked. Everyone did something and mom was finally relaxing.
2. Gift Basket
Get a nice, big basket at a craft store (or if you have one lying around, that's even better). Have everyone in your family (excluding mom) pick out a few things from the store that she'll like. We did this one for Father's Day last year, but it works super well and it's a great idea for either parent. Using my father as an example, we put coca cola bottles (the old one), a book of sudoku (his favorite), a new pair of headphones (because my brother stole his), two of his ties wrapped as new (to be funny), one actually new tie, toy cars, candy, all his favorite things. And he absolutely loved it. Think of your mom, what she likes, the small things that people don't really think of first, and stick those in a basket.
3. Picnic in the Park
Whether it's Central Park, Flushing Meadows Park, or any park you know that's in your area, packing a picnic for mom and the whole family to spend the day out at the park is a great way to celebrate the family. You can even make it simple with ham and cheese sandwiches or with peanut butter and jelly, some iced tea or lemonade, and crackers and fruit to snack on. You can pack games to play or simply some music so everyone can show off their dance moves. This idea is designed for the family to spend the day out together and have some fun.
4. Decorate a mug
This one takes some time to make but it comes with that personal touch that moms absolutely adore. You can buy a white mug at the dollar store (or any solid color mug, doesn't have to be white). You'll also need oil-based sharpies, which you can get at a craft store. They are usually more expensive, but the end result of this gift idea is so worth it. Wash the mug first and let dry. You can find cool cutouts of flowers or other things mom loves online or you can write a good quote on the mug or a personal message. Make sure to wear gloves when decorating the mug so as not to get the oil from your hands on the mug. Once it's been decorated, you need to bake it for about 2 hours and then it needs to rest for 24 hours. After that you should wash the mug to make sure it doesn't wash off (which it shouldn't). And you've created a personalized mug for mom! For more information, click here.
5. Create a scrapbook
Moms are all about making memories. Whether it's pictures or keeping a journal, they want to remember the babies when they are babies and show them off when they're grown. Search through those old family albums and grab a few of those favorite pictures of hers and create a scrapbook. Everyone in the family should write messages for her and draw little things in the scrapbook, too. This makes it special, that everyone pitched in to create something for her that she can look at and never want to put down.
6. Gardening Tools
My mom has recently gone into gardening, as many moms out there eventually do, so she has little pots set up with flowers and herbs. She's super proud of her growing garden and always shows it off to company. So, getting her some tools and signs for her to label each plant makes sense but also is a great idea. Moms usually make do with what they have, so having her splurge a little on something she's really invested in will make her extremely happy.
7. Cooking Books
Same goes for cooking. Moms have recipes in a little box or in a drawer, not really organized. Get a book and get crafty. Put them in there and label them. Decorate the book in the style of your mom and make it personal by adding little notes of your own about the recipes. Add a few more in there that she hasn't done or should make again. She'll love it and appreciate that you've organized it for her.
8. Wine Tasting
For the classy moms out here, and for every mom who has a classy side but rarely shows it, take her to a wine tasting. Make her shower, dress up nice, do her hair and makeup, be fancy for an evening sipping wine and eating cheese and grapes. It's not something she usually gets to do, so it's a great way to make her feel special.
Moms are always thinking of other people, especially the family. They put themselves last. Mother's Day shouldn't be the only day we celebrate everything they do for us; we should remind our moms that they are loved and appreciated every day. But on Mother's Day, we remind every mom everywhere that their hard work doesn't go unnoticed. When it comes to gifts, moms don't care about how much money is spent or the size of the gift; giving something personal, from the heart, means so much more to them.
