I am a Potterhead. I absolutely adore the "Harry Potter" series, books and movies alike. I know that movie adaptations of books are never perfect, but I always thought that the "Potter" movies were simply wonderful in how they represented the story of the books. Even so, there is no doubting there were many differences between the books and the movies. Here are seven moments the "Harry Potter" movies just got it wrong.
1. "Did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire?"
If you're a fan of the books, you knew this was coming. It is expressly stated that Dumbledore asked Harry this question calmly. I don't know about you, but Dumbledore was anything but calm in the movie.
2. Harry and Hermione dancing
This cute dancing scene did not happen at all in the books. I suspect it was added to fuel the fire of those who wanted Harry to end up with Hermione ... too bad he didn't.
3. "You have your mother's eyes."
In the books, Harry's eyes are as green as his mother's were. Here, young Lily Evans clearly has dark brown eyes. In the films, Harry's eyes are blue. Now, eye color isn't necessarily a big deal, usually, but they decided to keep this line in the films. They could have completely left it out, but they chose to use it. You'd think they could have at the very least sprung for some colored contact lenses.
4. "Give her hell from us, Peeves."
Peeves was a poltergeist known for playing pranks and making mischief around Hogwarts and was a friend of the Weasley twins. They said this line to him, referring to Umbridge, as they left Hogwarts during the Order of the Phoenix. He was completely left out of the movies.
5. S.P.E.W. and Ron and Hermione's kiss
Hermione created The Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare (S.P.E.W.) to, well, promote the welfare of house-elves. It's only when, in the midst of a war, Ron expresses a wish to go back and save the house-elves that Hermione throws her arms around him and kisses him. With no mention of S.P.E.W. in the movies, the kiss had to be changed, too.
6. Teddy Lupin
I adored Remus and Tonks being together, and the movies cast them brilliantly. Only they forgot one thing; Tonks gets pregnant, and has a baby in the middle of the war! This whole rather important fact was cut out of the movies. Those who haven't read the books won't get the same tragic realization that not only do Remus and Tonks die, but they leave behind a little baby boy named Teddy.
7. Tom Riddle's backstory
The movies only divulge the fact that Tom Riddle is an orphan. They make no mention of Merope Gaunt, his mother, and her tragic life with her father and brother. Nor do they mention the fact that Merope was a squib, and the Dark Lord Voldemort's father, Tom Marvolo Sr., was a muggle. Yeah, that's right. Though his followers glory in their pure-blood, Voldemort himself wasn't even pureblood. So while the movies didn't exactly get this part wrong, they could have built Tom Riddle's on-screen character a lot more if they'd included his background.
