7 Things I Learned By Deleting My Social Apps For 7 Days

My week-long hiatus from social media.

I deleted my social media apps from my phone for one week. I chose to do this because I wanted to see what life was like without the social media apps I have grown accustomed to using every day. When I started deleting my social media I began asking myself if certain apps were considered social media such as Pinterest. I did not want to delete all of the apps I used on a daily basis.

However, in the end, I decided Pinterest was considered social media and sadly deleted it, along with Facebook, Facebook messenger, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram.

1. Social media is a part of my everyday routine and it was hard adjusting to.

Every morning this past week I woke up and instinctually reached for my phone and went to open Facebook, only it wasn't there anymore; I was met with a wave of disappointment upon realizing I had promised myself I would do my best to go without social media for the week. I did this several times throughout the days of the week. Whenever I was waiting in a line, waiting for the commercial to end on tv, or waiting in between classes, I opened my phone with the intention of getting on Facebook, Snapchat, or Instagram and contently scrolling the time away.

2. I had a lot more time on my hands to be productive.

Instead of scrolling for hours at a time through social media I had a good amount of free time available. I had time to watch movies and actually watch them instead of scrolling through social media while having a movie on in the background. I procrastinated on my homework less and got my school work done early for a change.

3. FOMO is real.

Without social media I couldn't see what all of my friends were doing. I missed out on knowing the fun things they were doing in their lives for a week. Other people were on their phones everywhere I went. I found myself looking at people using social media, wishing I could look too.

4. Without social media I missed out on important events.

Joe Jonas got engaged and I was completely blindsided after my week long hiatus. My childhood crumbled right before my eyes. Dramatics set aside, I didn't realize how much I depended on social media to keep up with current events. Without social media for a week I realized really hoe much can happen in a weeks time in the world.

5. Without my eyes glued to my phone I was much more observant.

While waiting between classes or on breaks at work I wasn't glued to my phone so I was more aware of what was going on around me and open to talking to more people during my breaks. Also while riding in the car I saw so much more when I wasn't busy looking at my phone.

6. I'm nosey.

I'll be honest I use social media mostly to see what everyone is doing, people I went to high school with, co-workers, and friends in different states. Three people announced they were engaged, two people announced they were having babies. So much happens in a week and I missed it all!

7. I would never choose to give up social media forever.

While it was interesting to see how it would be without social media for a week I wouldn't choose to do it again. Social media is used so much in our society, I feel like you're at a disadvantage without it. However, I think it's a fun thing everyone can try to see how much social media impacts our lives on an every day basis.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
