8 Things All People From 'The Five Towns' Miss When They Go Away For School

Is it bad that almost all of these are food places?

The Five Towns (Hewlett, Lawrence, Inwood, Woodmere and Cedarhurst) are a closely knit set of communities located on Long Island's south shore, approximately a 40-minute train ride from NYC and a 20-minute ride down to the ocean.

The Five Towns are home to major treasures, and was the best place to grow up (seriously, ask anyone). So when five-towners go away to college, here are some of the things they're missing / begging their parents to ship up.

1. The Cheese Store

Although its name suggests they're known for their cheese (which, btw, does happen to be BOMB), the small shop is famous for its iced coffees. There are hundreds of flavors to choose from, ranging from white Russian (a personal fave), to French tweezy (basically like french toast) and everything in between. And you know you HAVE to splurge and get yours with melted sugar instead of the usual Splenda.

2. Bagelo

Not only does Bagelo have the best bagels, they also make a mean chopped salad. And eggs. And coffees. And quesadillas. And lettuce wraps (<3). You get my point. Once you leave the Five Towns, you'll be missing your hungover Sunday breakfasts with the squad there and running into like, the whole high school.

3. Chateau

No, it's not a French mansion. Chateau, the quaint neighborhood cafe and coffee shop is always bustling on Saturdays. It's the home of the "mish" (aka a really, really chopped salad and my savior), and you'll be running here straight from the plane/train/car, etc.

4. Marinara

Obviously the #1 pizza place in the Five Towns, Marinara has been a town staple for years. In addition to killer pizza, they also serve dank pasta, soups and salads (the Bistro is my personal fav, but just hold the pecans).

5. Xaga

Xaga is THE place to be on a Saturday or Friday night — it's where all the kids go before partying hard later on in the night. Xaga's always packed whether during lunch hours or on the weekends. Note: Always look put-together when you enter because you'll obviously run into your ex/crush/frenemy/nosy community members. Also, order their chicken and broccoli.

6. The Docks

Although I'm laughing out loud as I type this, you know you love The Docks (until the security patrol come and make you peace out). It's a gorgeous view of the water and great place to go with your "special someone" (drunk hookup?) or just hang out with your friends (FYI, if you're going to the docks you're probs going to smoke anyways). But peace, love The Docks, always and forever.

7. Hewlett Harbor

"The Harbor" was where I learned to bike and eventually drive my car. The roads are mostly clear and wide, and the homes are astonishing and gorgeous to look at. The view of the water isn't so bad either. Walking in the harbor is the absolute best way to clear your mind and be #healthy while trying to take a cool Insta. Also, how can you forget all the times you aimlessly drove around the harbor trying to find a party? #goals

8. Hewlett Station Yogurt

On Buy One Get One Tuesday's and Saturday's, the line will be out the door, but you know it's so worth the wait. Especially the cookies and cream flavor with cookie dough on top in a kiddie cup. Hewlett Station is home of the "Hewlee," basically a yogurt milkshake with any kind of toppings you want mixed in (my fav: the brownie muffin and banana <3). Hewlett Station Yogurt is H-town's claim to fame and the signature town staple, so eat up and enjoy.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
