Growing up being one of the tallest girls in my class has had its ups and downs. Now that I'm older, I would never trade my height for the world, but it hasn't always been that way. I was always self-conscious about my height until high school when I decided to embrace it. Here's some struggles that almost every tall girl has faced and embraced.
Every cute skirt, dress or shorts that look awesome on a normal-sized person are super short on us Amazon legged women.
So you see these super cute cotton flow-y shorts thinking, "oh I can rock these at tailgate" and then you try them on and BAM! There's your booty hanging out of the bottom. It's always been hard to find things that are long enough without being too "grandma." But whenever you do find something that is a good length then you strut in it with those long legs of ours.
You wear heels and everyone says "aren't you tall enough?"
Yes, we realize that wearing these heels makes us 6-ft tall but we like to wear heels, too! They make us feel pretty and make our legs look awesome. For me, I like being taller and it makes me feel good about myself. Plus, there's some awesome heels out there.
It was always awkward when you were taller than your middle school crush.
Most girls in general have felt this pain because our growth spurts come earlier than boys' do. But for us especially tall middle school girls, it was always so awkward dancing with your middle school sweetheart because he wasn't even eye level with you. Most of them catch up eventually, but those first couple years of crushing on boys were some of those most irritating.
People actually ask the "how's the weather up there" joke.
Why? I don't know. We both know that the weather is the same and that the joke is not funny in any way. It's one of those jokes that you fake laugh at and then roll your eyes. I've heard this "joke" many times and still wonder how that joke is still alive.
Not only are short clothing an issue, so are pants.
While finding short things is its own battle, pants can be just as difficult. Finding the right length in jeans is pretty frustrating sometimes. You get the "long" jeans in your size and of course they're too short, so you go a size up and you always have to wear a belt and usually have a saggy butt. Back to the short jeans, which in order to look right, you now have to roll them up. We can never win, can we?
You're always the one that everyone asks to get something down for them.
Yeah, it's nice to help people with your awesome height and long arms. But sometimes it can be the most inconvenient thing. Sometimes I'll be doing something of my own and someone will ask me to get something. Of course I answer with a "yeah" and drop whatever I'm doing to help. Reaching up on the top shelf to get something, a lot of the times, and something else comes tumbling down with it hitting you in the face. "Thank you so much" they say. "Thanks for the black eye" you think.
We have that awkward "don't know how to move you body" phase because our limbs are too long.
We all remember the times when our legs and arms were too long for our own good and every movement we did looked super unnatural. Our parents never thought we had a chance at sports and our nickname was usually something like "baby deer." Thankfully, we gain control of our awkward limbs and can manage to be somewhat graceful.
While all of these things were probably bad at some point in our lives, I wouldn't trade them for anything. I love being tall and would love to be taller. Now we are tall women who aren't afraid to strut what we have. These struggles have only made us stronger and if you are still struggling with being insecure about your height, rock it girl.Embrace those long legs and learn to love your height and yourself. Plus, we are on top of the world because we can already see over half of the people out there.
