According to the ever-so-trustworthy-and-most-reliable-source-for-facts Google, the average height for a woman is currently 5'5". I've always related to being a "tall girl," and people around me like to stick me in that category as well. Once again using my most accurate resource, the internet, I have learned that a girl is not technically "tall" until she is 5'9" or over. I'm 5'8". 5'7.75" if you want to get really specific. This puts me in a really awkward "too tall to be average, too average to be tall" category. If you're anything like me, you might relate to some of these slightly above average height issues.
1. Regular jeans are too short, but long jeans are too long
Retailers, what do you expect us to do? I don't know about you, but as a college student, I can't afford to have my pants tailored to perfection. Therefore, I'm forced to choose between the "awkwardly above the ankle" or "rolled too much to be chic" look.
2. Guys under 6' are right between too short and just tall enough.
5'11" may seem fine in flats, but what happens when you put on heels? It's a constant mathematical struggle.
3. On that note, there's nothing more aggravating than when the short girls go after the tall guys.
I understand that we like who we like, and tbh you probably make a cute couple, but that doesn't stop me from being frustrated about being left with all the guys who are barely 5'10". Please for the love of all things good leave us some of the tall guys.
4. You're always either ducking or stretching.
I could be Legolas, or I could be Gimli; honestly, it's easy to be both. Getting things from a bottom shelf requires an awkward squatting position, but reaching the top shelf requires tip-toes and sometimes something to step up on. Short girls, you're not the only ones climbing on counters.
5. You can easily be the tallest or shortest person in the room.
This goes whether you're around guys or girls. I could be the tallest person in one friend group, but also be the shortest person in the other friend group. It's a 50/50 chance.
6. Shoes make a huge difference.
If my short friends wear heels, they're still shorter than me. Even if I'm usually around 5'8" on average, one good pair of wedges later and I'll be 6'. I can go from being the same height as my mom to being at eye level with my brother. Heels are life changing.
7. Regular dresses can be too short, but maxi dresses can be too long
It's the same thing as the jeans: a complete and total struggle of the in-between phase.
Welcome to the wonderful world of "too tall to be average, too average to be tall."
