Back in 2010, I began watching the first season of "Downton Abbey" on a whim. I had merely heard the name of the show and, since I was most likely procrastinating on some homework or other, I decided to give it a try. At first I was charmed by how perfectly real the show seemed, according to the year it was set in.
I had no idea how very much the show would mean to me.
1. Maggie Smith is in it.
If you need another reason to watch it, you know nothing Jon Snow. Almost all of the great sayings of this show come from her character and it is really a treat to see her. Isobel: "How you hate to be wrong." Violet (Smith): "I wouldn't know. I'm not familiar with the sensation." "I know several couples who are perfectly happy. Haven't spoken in years." Violet: "I'm not a romantic, but even I concede that the heart does not exist solely for the purpose to pump blood."
2. It has the best quotes/sayings you will ever hear. As you read above, their lines are awesome.
4. They show how important family is.
In the midst of the new modern world, with aristocratic houses threatening to disappear, family joined together is what makes things work, and makes things bearable in hard times."We Crawley's stick together." -Lady Mary5. It's accurate.
Everything, or mostly everything is historically accurate, down to the clothing. This puts you directly in that time period when you're watching it, and makes you want to talk in their English accents!6. The acting!
The actors in the show are world-class. Their characters feel so real that you feel like they are indeed real- they will feel like your closest family and friends.7. The drama.
The drama is supremely entertaining. At the end of the day, the main reason you keep watching a show is because of the story/drama. "Downton Abbey's" drama is not petty like many shows out there- it's moving and wonderful! Go watch it now!
