Some people think of journaling, or any type of writing for that matter, as a lost art form. Well, it shouldn’t be. Here are just some of the reasons why you should express yourself in writing.
1. It’s not healthy to keep your feelings bottled up.
Getting your emotions out on paper first lets you release a lot of pent up aggression towards others, and saves you from some social awkwardness. Any problems that you keep to yourself will probably come back to bite you, or make a situation 1,000 times worse. Maybe you can’t tell your best friend that you have a little crush on her brother because she’d judge you and get mad -- but your diary won’t.
2. To unleash your creativity.
You are such an interesting and creative person, but you probably haven’t unlocked your full creative potential. Writing creatively, or about what happens in your day-to-day life helps. Before you know it, you’ll be thinking to yourself, “How did I think of that?” You thought of that $1,000,000 idea because writing something creative inspired you.
3. For a good laugh.
It’s fun to look back on your awkward moments and see how you’ve grown as a person. How else would you so vividly remember the time you had that really awkward V-neck sunburn at prom and your dress was strapless? Well, those pictures will never let you forget it, but since you’re so funny anyway, your version is great, too.
4. Sometimes, you could use a break from the digital world.
Social media is awesome, and a great way to connect to people, but it’s nice to have your own private space, away from all the craziness of the real world.
5. You could be like Bridget Jones.
True, she’s a hot mess, but everyone has their moments. Even as the classic example of a hot mess, she has multiple hot men pursuing her, which, let’s face it, is not the worst thing that can happen.
6. For the memories.
As you mature, things in your life will change. Your friends, relationships, jobs, etc. will go through some changes. Some things might stay the same, but it’s still nice to look back and be able to see how your feelings towards some things have changed and how you’ve evolved.
7. Writing makes you a stronger person.

If you’re able to express yourself, people will respect you. Being in touch with your feelings allows you to be empathetic towards others’ feelings. That way, you'll strengthen yourself and your relationships.
As Oscar Wilde said, “I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read in the train.” Ultimately, your journal is for you, not anyone else. It’s empowering to be in charge of your own thoughts, and a journal helps you embrace that. Plus, your life is wonderful! You should always have something sensational to read. And who knows, maybe some day your diary will inspire future generations.
