I’m going to make a bet with you.
I bet that once you read this article, you’ll at least consider adding “Wynonna Earp” to your watchlist on Netflix.
Not convinced? Here, I’ll give you five -- no, seven reasons to watch “Wynonna Earp.”
First, you need a summary.
It’s basically “Supernatural” meets the Old West. It’s about the Earp family (as in Wyatt Earp) as they try to break the family curse that makes all of the people Wyatt Earp killed come back as demon things (called “revenants”) until the heir (Wynonna) sends them back to hell. The only thing that can kill them is Peacemaker, Wyatt’s gun. Wynonna works alongside her younger sister, Waverly, an agent of a top-secret government, Xavier Dolls, and Doc Holliday.
Here’s why you need to watch this show.
1. Wynonna herself
She’s tough as nails, but can be vulnerable and complex as well. She’s got some of the best one-liners and is one of my favorite characters on any TV show.
2. Wynonna's sister, Waverly
She kicks just as much butt as her sister. She may not be able to wield Peacemaker, but she knows more about the curse and Earp family history than just about anyone. She’s sweet, but she learns to stand up for herself and be her own person. Being a tough person doesn't take away from her kindness, and that's a great thing to see in media.
3. The story
They definitely know how to keep you interested with plenty of cliffhangers and interesting plot development in every episode.
4. The tone
It knows when to be dark, when to be creepy, but also when to be funny. The dialogue is witty, and most of the show’s humor lies in one-liners from the characters, especially Wynonna.
5. Waverly and Wynonna’s relationship
Their relationship is one of the most important ones on the show, and it reminds me a little of Kara and Alex’s relationship on "Supergirl".
6. "Wayhaught"
This is the ship name for Waverly Earp and Nicole Haught (yes, that is her real last name, and yes, she lives up to it). They are so cute together, and have one of the healthiest relationships I’ve seen on TV. Plus, they’re excellent example of positive LGBT representation.
7. The villains
The revenants aren’t just dime-a-dozen, filler villains. They each have their own interesting (sometimes messed up) backstories, which makes for an even richer narrative.
Plus there’s Bobo Del Rey, and he’s much more intimidating than his name will let on. Plus he’s complex and interesting as a villain. Constance Clootie, a witch, is also an interesting player in this game, too.
Season 1 is on Netflix, with Season 2 coming on Netflix pretty soon, since Season 3 will be airing on SyFy in 2018.
