7 Reasons To Shop Local
Kiera Bryn Woods

Being able to spend some time in a country town smack dab in the middle of Texas has been so fun! One of the reasons it's been a blast is because of all the local businesses. From Gristmill to the Gruene Hall, I’ve made a conscious effort to seek out these little jewels all over the area.

In this day and age our hometowns, both big and small, are being oversaturated with big businesses. Whatever happened to a kid riding their bike down to Wally’s Filling Station to get a Pepsi? (Shoutout to you Andy Griffith lovers out there!) Small businesses are beyond worthy of recognition.

Need some motivation to start checking out local businesses? Look no further!

1. Be Unique.

Yes, the tapestry might be from Urban Outfitters but why buy the same one that every other millennial owns? Check out your local antique markets and find a treasure that has a little character. You’ll walk away with a one-of-a-kind experience too!

2. In a world full of quantity, value quality.

Sure, that bookshelf might be $20 cheaper, but because it’s plywood you might only have a year before it breaks. Same goes for your lunch, it may be less of an investment to buy a drive-thru mystery meat cheeseburger, but should cutting corners be okay when it comes to fueling your body? Check out some of your local farmer's markets or cafes!

3. Get to know your community.

There are some awesome people out there that own these unique shops! Instead of being just a number, you’ll often get a personalized experience at a place like this. Get to know these owners and see how rewarding it is. Not only are you benefitting yourself, but you’re helping them support their families and grow their business.

4. Contribute to the success of your local economy.

The numbers are out! Small businesses account for 64% of new jobs in the United States. Having roots in the local business community often leads to connections in the political community, providing you with the ability to have a voice concerning key decisions in your hometown.

5. Shop for a cause.

Small businesses as a whole donate 250% more than the big guys to nonprofit and community causes. How cool is it to be a part of something that could change not only your community but the world? Talk to owners of these businesses and find out what causes they support.

6. Go Green.

Local businesses help the environment tremendously. Due to their smaller size, these shops and stores often consume less land space. The majority of their products come from nearby, conserving gas and reducing air pollution.

7. Save money!

Yes, you heard me right. It might be an investment now but you’re actually saving yourself money in the future. While big businesses suck up tax money, local shops keep YOUR money in YOUR town. Buying a quality product prevents having to purchase another one when it breaks.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
