7 Questions College Students Hate Being Asked Any Time, But Especially On Breaks

I'm begging you, please don't!

With Thanksgiving just passing, I was once again reminded of how much I hate answering the same generic questions over and over again.

During the holiday season, everyone sees family members or friends that they haven't seen in months. Of course, I love catching up with these people, but come on. When you are my age, no one has all the answers to the rest of their lives figured out.

Yes, everyone means well and just wants to see you succeed and be happy, but please, can we talk about something else?

1. How are your grades?

Okay, who really wants to talk about grades. Yes, college is about getting an education and achieving the best grades that you can, but when I am on break, the last thing I want to think about is schoolwork. If I wanted to talk about grades, I would bring it up. Us college students are doing the best we can!

2. What is your major?

Now yes, this is worth asking, but when you have to answer to everyone over and over again because they forgot, just let it go. There is a reason my Facebook profile has my major listed...

3. How is college?

Besides being stressful, fun, challenging, overwhelming, and the time of my life all at the same time? It's good. Sorry, that's the best answer you're going to get from me.

4. What do you want to do after college?

I am only a college Sophomore, do I really need to have the rest of my life figured out at this time? I'm just focusing on passing all of my classes right now. Figuring out what exactly I'd like to do as my "adult" job is a loaded question that I am nowhere near ready to answer.

5. What exactly does your major mean?

Asking me to sum up what a Communication studies major is would take a long time. Communications Journalism is so many different aspects in one. You can do anything from broadcasting to public relations so it is really a more detailed question than you would think.

6. Do you have anyone special up at school?

What is with people wanting to know about my relationship status? Who cares what my "love life" is or is not. I swear it's like I am supposed to know my future husband by the time I turn 22.

7. How are your classes?

Alright, yeah there are some classes that I have taken so far that I do enjoy, but at the end of the day, it's still school. Especially when I am still taking gen eds, my level of enjoyment towards classes I am being forced to take is not too high. When I start taking classes for my major then I'll actually have a reasonable answer.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
