If you're like me, you were sorely disappointed in "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child." The hype was so strong, and my expectations were so high that when the book fell flat, I had to turn back to the originals that I know and love. I'm currently rereading the fourth book now, and I began thinking of scenes in the original series that could mask the ridiculousness of the new book. I mean, the Trolley Witch...are we just going to pretend that didn't happen? The "Cursed Child" may have disappointed many fans, but here are seven moments to make you forget about it.
1. The moment Harry finds out he's a wizard.
Nothing beats the first time you read the scene where Hagrid tells Harry he's a wizard. For several chapters, you get the lead up of strange things happening to Harry Potter as a young boy, leading up to the point where every odd thing to ever happen to him finally makes sense.
2. When Harry helps to free Dobby from Lucius Malfoy.
The Malfoy family makes a return in the "Cursed Child" in an awkward series of circumstances, but in the original series, the Malfoy family was the enemy. Lucius tosses Harry's dirty sock and the reader learns the Dobby catches it, and good triumphs over evil once again. Scorpius Malfoy is a decent character in the "Cursed Child", but Malfoy's return and alliance with Harry doesn't seem to make sense with the way that the epilogue ended.
3. When Hermione smacks Malfoy across the face for making fun of Hagrid.
Hermione's character is Minister for Magic in the "Cursed Child", which is definitely reflective of her character throughout the series, although different from what J.K. Rowling originally said her job was after Hogwarts. Her character seems to be the most believable one in the "Cursed Child", and made me remember the scene where Hermione shows Malfoy that he can't get away with everything just because of his father. Badass Hermione is always great.
4. When the Weasley twins correctly predict the outcome of the Quidditch World Cup.
Pretty much everyone has a soft spot for Fred and George, and when they won the bet on the Quidditch World Cup, it was a great moment. One major issue with the "Cursed Child" is that Ron's character has basically been turned into Fred to make up for his death in the last book. Just take a minute to enjoy one of the best Weasley twin moments while they were together.
5. When the centaurs carry Umbridge off into the woods in "The Order of the Phoenix."
Dealing with Umbridge throughout the fifth book got tiring because of how unbearable she is, so when she is carried off by the very beasts she hates, it's pretty rewarding. Umbridge makes a brief comeback in the "Cursed Child", but thankfully it's very short.
6. That time that Harry took Felix Felicis and nothing could go wrong.
There's nothing like liquid luck to make you wish you lived in the magical world. The sixth book is pretty dark, but lighter scenes like this make up for it. The movie adaptation somehow makes it even funnier, and you should definitely rewatch that scene if you need a good laugh.
7. When Harry sees his parents, Sirius, and Lupin before facing Voldemort.
For Harry's entire life, he hasn't been able to properly meet his parents, and in the last book he finally does. This moment of light in the darkness is something that I really feel was missing from the "Cursed Child." The "darkness" was hardly there, the characters were cartoonish, and the plot read like fanfiction. Hopefully remembering these moments from the original series inspires you to read them again.
