Whether you grew up reading the Harry Potter books and watching the movies or you have no idea what a "Hufflepuff" is, there's no denying that the series contains several inspirational moments. Contrary to what some believe, Harry Potter isn't just any old children's story about wizards. There are countless times, both in the books and in the films, where characters say profound, encouraging quotes that we college students sometimes need to be reminded of. To anyone who ever said you can't learn anything from a children's book series, I suggest that you read the following quotes (as well as this wonderful article which explains some of the many life lessons Harry Potter teaches its readers/viewers) and prepare to think differently!

1. "Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light." -Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

No matter what is going on in your life academically, socially, or otherwise, you can find at least a glimmer of happiness. It can be extremely difficult at times, but try to find something positive in every day, no matter how small it may be.

2. "Working hard is important, but there is something that matters even more: believing in yourself." -Harry Potter, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Working hard definitely helps in achieving your goals, but believing in yourself and trusting your skills and knowledge will make reaching those goals much more enjoyable. Everyone on this planet is capable of doing great things; don't sell yourself short, and realize that you can do anything you set your mind to.

3. "Things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end, if not always in the way we expect." -Luna Lovegood, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

If something seems to be going wrong, just be patient. Chances are it will turn out well, even if it isn't in the way you initially expected. Everything happens for a reason, even if that reason doesn't seem obvious at first.

4. "Don't let the Muggles get you down." -Ron Weasley, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Don't let people who don't believe in you make you think any less of yourself. Pessimistic people and those who try to get you down aren't worth your time; rise above their negative influences and take charge of your own happiness.

5. "It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live." -Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Having dreams is wonderful, but it is perhaps even more important that you remember to enjoy the present moment while it lasts. Dreams are great, but making those dreams your reality is even better.

6. "Every great wizard in history has started out as nothing more than what we are now: students. If they can do it, why not us?" -Harry Potter, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Sometimes, it can seem like becoming successful in something is an unreachable goal; however, everyone who has ever been great at anything started out as a beginner. If you invest enough time, effort, and patience, there's no reason you can't be a success.

7. "It is important to remember that we all have magic inside us." -J.K. Rowling

It's normal to get discouraged with yourself once in a while, but try to remind yourself that as humans, we are all pretty spectacular. We may not be able to levitate objects with the wave of a wand (well, that's not exactly true), but we are capable of doing some pretty magical things nonetheless.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
