2016 has been a big year for virtual reality or VR technology. VR has changed the game in entertainment for video games, sports and more. It's next potential movement in tech? Film.
IMAX recently released a statement that they are in partnership with Swedish technology developer, Starbreeze AB to bring VR technology to the big screen. The two are hoping to open at least six VR locations, worldwide this year. The first one being in Los Angeles, CA.
According to the Wall Street Journal, IMAX Chief Executive Richard Gelfond went to comment that the move VR is a hope to expand the brand's identity beyond film. He continued to state that he imagines the VR experience to range form $7- $10 for ten minutes of VR time.
More details are yet to be given on the work. Gelfond continued to add that the integration of VR is also part of a larger strategy to expand the company’s brand beyond movies; but a movie lover can dream right? So here's a list of full length feature films that I feel would be amazing, translated to the VR screen.
1. Disney's Fantasia
Disney's "Fantasia" is a film known notoriously for it's vibrant animation, colors and music. If you have not had the opportunity to see Fantasia live at a Disney park or 3-D in theaters, then seeing it in VR would be the next greatest thing.
2. Avatar
Winner of three Academy Awards including Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects, I feel that Avatar would be a great sight to experience in VR. The film was made using the newest motion capture filming techniques at its time. "Avatar" was made specifically to view in the highest quality of standard screening, 3-D, and 4-D (yes, four!) in select South Korean theaters.
3. Jurassic Park
Don't tell me you wouldn't want to be part of this dynamic experience. Show of hands for those who'd pass a chance to visit a theme park with dinosaurs?
4. Star Wars
Need I explain myself for this one? It's S-T-A-R-W-A-R-S!!
5. Titanic
Take a once in a life time trip on the Titanic. There'll be romance, food, dancing, and more. No lifejackets necessary, but please do bring tissues.
6. The Avengers
Action! Superheroes! Marvel! all the more reasons this should totally be a virtual reality experience. Could you imagine the feeling of being behind all those fight scenes?
7. Friday the Thirteenth
For the daring film lovers, I'd imagine "Friday the Thirteenth" to be as thrilling to experience in VR as it is to watch in standard viewing. It's scary enough to keep movie lovers holding onto someone's hand as they would to their popcorn.
Now it's your turn! If you could experience any film-- feature, full length, short or more in virtual reality what would you choose and why? Share and let us know.
