Since moving to New York City for school (and need I say it’s only been about two and a half months since I moved here), I have seen a total of five Broadway shows. I’ve been to Broadway many more times before, but I never knew I could see a Broadway show for less than $100! Those lovely deals can be found on a website/app called TodayTix, which I highly recommend checking out the day of a show to get some really great deals. Broadway is one of the best things about New York, so why not take advantage of it? Here are the best Broadway shows to see for a cheaper price:
1. Phantom of the Opera- from $39
Phantom of the Opera is a classic show- I saw it on Broadway when I was ten years old and cried my eyes out. The show is beautiful and heartbreaking, with a classic, elegant score one can always appreciate. It’s also one of the longer running shows on Broadway, so I highly recommend, if you’re looking for classic Broadway, you check this one out!
2. Hello, Dolly- from $39
This classic, charming, fun Broadway show is full of recognizable figures and extremely enjoyable music. Bette Midler is currently in the production, but Bernadette Peters is scheduled to take the role of Dolly Levi starting around February 2018. If you’re looking for a classic Broadway show with lots of laughs and great show moments, this is the one for you!
3. Miss Saigon- from $35
I personally have not seen Miss Saigon on Broadway, but I’ve heard many great things about the show, and it starts at a stellar price on TodayTix. Set in the Vietnam War, the story follows the romantics of a young woman and an American soldier. The score is beautiful, and the story is incredibly touching. What more could you want?
4. School of Rock- from $59
If you’ve seen the movie with Jack Black playing Dewy Finn and Miranda Cosgrove playing Summer, you’re going to love this show. It’s adorable, it’s funny, it’s clever, and it’s full of talented kids who play their own instruments on stage! The singing is great, and the music is a contemporary rock and roll adventure. I know this show’s gotten mixed reviews, but I personally saw it and loved it.
5. Anastasia- from $69
Also another movie-musical adaptation, Anastasia follows a young Russian girl who turns out to be the heir to the Russian monarchy that fell years ago. Even though the musical is slightly different than the movie, it still packs all the feeling and beauty that Anastasia brought you years ago. This has been on my “must-see” list forever, so you should definitely go see it!
6. Sweeney Todd- the Demon Barber of Fleet Street- from $60
Sweeney Todd is a classic, incredible musical. Coming from someone who played Mrs. Lovett in high school, I absolutely love love LOVE this musical. It’s full of humor, of mystery, and of murders (on stage, might I add, for those who are seeking a little bit of a thrill). I have not personally seen this production of Sweeney, but I have heard great things. Any production of Sweeney is incredible, so this is a must-see (and for only $60)!
7. Waitress the Musical- from $79
This show is a little more on the expensive side when it comes to TodayTix, but it is worth every cent. This musical is absolutely amazing — the story follows a young woman in an abusive relationship who gets pregnant and doesn’t know if she’s going to be a good mother, or if she’s going to keep the child. The music is inspiring, it’s heart-wrenching, and it’s ultimately a hell of a lot of fun. It combines every great thing about a musical into one show, and the music is more contemporary for those of you who prefer more modern stuff. This show is a MUST SEE.
These aren’t the only shows out there, however. Some other shows I recommend you go see are Aladdin, The Book of Mormon, The Play that Goes Wrong, Chicago, Wicked, Avenue Q (Off-Broadway), and many many others. Check out the TodayTix website to see a full list of shows, and let the viewing begin! :)
