Ah, it's that wonderful time of year again. Finals are over and you're on the road back home, excited for all-things hometown, and obviously Christmas! We wait for this magical day all year long and put so much preparation and excitement into it. But as a college student, the one thing we dread every time are those absurd questions and awkward encounters at family gatherings.
So, here are some tips on how to survive your Christmas gathering this year:
1. Avoid those drunken relatives.
Take this one as seriously as possible. We all know old Uncle Joe gets a little creepy after that fifth vodka tonic. Dodging this bullet will get you out of A LOT of unnecessary, and just plain weird, small talk. In fact, maybe you should even think about hiding behind Auntie Jane's ginormous Christmas tree.
2. Fake those laughs and smiles.
Keep a smile on your face at all times. Even if you don't really like the knitted pair of socks your great aunt made you this year. Having a smile on your face will disguise your true feelings, and no one will question your masked miserable mood.
3. Find a good spot to have a time-out.
Personally, I like to lock myself in the bathroom from time to time to compose myself. But just take a quick break for about five minutes, and remind yourself that family is the best gift to have at Christmas time!
4. Devour as much food as possible.
Food is the No. 1 cure for anything. Bad mood? Divulge yourself in the dessert table. You won't regret it. Remember, that homemade chocolate coconut cake is always there when no one else is.
5. Ask your relatives questions before they grill you first.
Looking to avoid those godawful questions? "So, do you have a boyfriend?" "Why are you a communication major?" "Did you get better grades this semester?" Yeah, absolutely no one likes getting asked these questions over and over. So, you have just do it to them first! I bet they won't like that so much, but it's good for them to get a taste of their own medicine.6. Lose control!
This, by far, is the most important one. What's the point of Christmas if you can't let loose and enjoy yourself? Make the most of the time you have with your family, because they are the most important people in your life. Yeah, they may be annoying at times, but in the end, it's all out of love, because they care about you. There's nothing better than a family Christmas filled with laughter and love!
