Spontaneity: something our society needs to start adopting – take risks and seek new adventures in life. Our society seems to be too focused on worrying and overthinking every little thing we do; my simple response is Why? Why stress over things that could be enjoyed? I started to adopt this way of thinking not too long ago and it has definitely made my life a whole lot more exciting. Around March shortly after my trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, I had intense feelings of wanderlust -- a strong desire to travel. I wanted to travel the world to my heart's content and explore the world and what it had to offer me.
Recently, I decided to take a spontaneous trip of my own – just for the pure need of adventure. Without even hesitating to think about it, I bought a plane ticket on a whim and traveled to Glacier National Park in Montana. Let’s just say that beautiful is definitely an understatement. It felt as if I was in a completely different world, surrounded by constant streams of mountains that seamlessly pierced the clouds above them. It was like a dream that I never wanted to wake up from. I knew then and there that wanderlust was a part of me, and it wouldn't be long before I found a new adventure.
Here are 6 reasons why you need to start traveling as soon as possible:
1. You learn about yourself
I discovered things about myself that I never would have imagined knowing, all because I ventured to a new place. I’ve always thought of myself as a city girl, born and raised. My goal was to end up living in the heart of Chicago. A weekend in the mountains was all it took for me to realize that the city life was definitely not for me in my future; I guess I wasn’t as much of a "yuppie" as I seemed to think I was. I learned that I liked the simpler things in life, and I wanted to be secluded from the busyness, surrounded by the beautiful wilderness, and joined by good, genuine people. It’s crazy how much you can discover about yourself just by placing yourself in a different set of shoes.
2. You don’t have responsibilities holding you back
College-age is the best time to travel. You don’t have a big job getting in the way, no significant other or kids holding you back. Your responsibilities are limited and your independence is soaring; don’t take it for granted.
3. You learn a different perspective
You look at the world in a completely different way than you did before you arrived. It may not seem like just a couple states away would have a different type of lifestyle, but you don't have to go far to experience people and cultures completely different from your own. It was quite strange when I was laughed at for the way I said “bag,” and when people were shocked to learn I had never shot a gun before. I was excited to gain a different insight into the world and look at everything in a completely different way.
4. You meet different people
It is quite amazing how much the place you grew up shapes who you are and the person you want to be. I’ve met some amazing down-to-earth people, but have also met some arrogant, snotty people that you could not pay me to hang out with for a day. You are able to learn so many different values and morals about life from different walks of life, which helps you to evaluate your own choices and be willing to stick with them or change them for the better. You are able learn more about yourself from a diverse collection of people around you than in a lecture hall for an entire semester at college. Now that, to me, is simply priceless.
5. You see beauty you never thought you’d appreciate so much
Waking up to the mountains right outside your bedroom window? I was speechless – I never could have gotten sick of that view. In the car, I would constantly look up to trees towering over me and rocks that looked as if they could have fallen on us at any second. It truly makes you appreciate the world you live in even more.
6. You learn how you should be living
Taking risks, being spontaneous and full of adventure -- that’s what life is truly about. You only go around once, so you should be living every moment to its entirety. Adventure is calling and it’s waiting to be explored. From this little spontaneous adventure, I have had no regrets.
