We're ranked number 1 for a good reason

6 Reasons I Love Living In A Dorm At SVSU
Saginaw Valley State University

Not everyone chooses to live in a dorm, but its a choice that many students at Saginaw Valley make. There's a reason we're ranked number one in housing in the state of Michigan. Living in dorms here is nothing like all the horror stories you hear about dorms at other colleges, here you feel welcome and like you have a home.

1. You feel at home

The dorms aren't brick wall or put into the basements of buildings. When you live here you truly feel like you have a place you can call home. The buildings are new and always clean, you can almost always smell food cooking at any time of day.

2. You have a kitchen in your dorm

If you're hungry you don't have to bundle up and walk a mile to the foc, you can cook in the comfort of your room. This is truly a luxury few get to enjoy, and I appreciate it every time I make Ramen at 3 in the morning.

3. People on your floor become family

Some of the best friends I have made live just a few doors down from me. If I need a pan or want to rant to my best friend I just have to throw on some slippers and walk down the hall. Having friends this close makes it easy for the friendship to develop greatly.

4. We're ranked number 1 for a reason

You don't get ranked first in the state very easily. The buildings are all fairly new, you have a kitchen with everything a college student could need in it. They supply you with so much that you wont have to bring in as much as you thought on move-in day.

5. The RA's are the bomb

The RA's are more than just an upper-classmen living in the same building as them- they're your friends. If you ever have a question or need someone to talk to, someone is always available for you. They don't judge you because they just want what is best for you.

6. You're just a short walk from everything

Whether you live in MJ Brandimore house or First Year Suites right in the center of campus, or Southwest on the other side of a road you are always just a short walk from everything. Classes aren't far, C store is just a short little stroll. This is very nice once the cold weather hits.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
