6 Personal Pledges That Everyone Needs To Have Instead Of 'Resolutions'

Some say go big or go home, but sometimes going simple is the best way to go.

When the end of the year comes around, people come up with new years resolutions. But what they don't realize is that you don't need a new year to make a pledge to yourself about becoming better. So instead of doing it just because it's the new year, do it because you want to better yourself now and forever. Here are a few simple ways to increase the quality of your everyday life, without setting an unreachable and unrealistic "new year's resolution."

1. Drink more water

Drinking water is so underrated. It helps everything from your appetite to your train of thought and skin complexion. It's a win-win in every aspect.

2. Be nicer to people

As simple as it sounds, we're all kind of huge jerks...being nice to someone can be beneficial in many different ways. It can build friendships and make you feel better about yourself by making others feel better.

3. Get involved

Get involved in a recreational sport, slow pitch softball, a book club or anything of that sort. This will take up any downtime you have and keep your character in tip-top shape.

4. Start your day with a workout/activity

I don't mean go buy a $30-per-month-year-long-contract at planet fitness, I mean start your day off with 25 push-ups and 40 sit-ups along with a little jog around the neighborhood. Or maybe begin your day by brain teaser on your phone or in a book to get the gears in your mind turning bright and early.

5. Limit the junk/fast food

Pack your lunch! Sure Mcdonalds tastes good and it's quick, but staying away from fatty foods like the Mcdouble or 4 for 4 at Wendy's can improve not only your physical but mental health too!

6. Accept yourself

I'm not saying you have to love your acne or the love handles you got after high school, but if you don't like something about yourself, actively work to change it... in a positive way. Throughout any transition, you need to tell yourself that you can do it because you are entirely good enough. You can conquer the world, you just have to convince yourself of it first.

By following a few of these simple pieces of advice, you can become happier with yourself. So many people are unhappy and lost, so dedicate this year and the following years to figuring out who you are and work to better yourself for the present and future you. Don't take no for an answer and just keep swimming.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
