You may hear many people throughout life talk about how different the East Coast is from the Midwest. I never really thought they would be all that different until I ending up moving from Ohio to New Hampshire. Spending a few of my summers on the Coast has introduced me to many new types of people and many different things.
1. Slang
I don't think I will ever get used to East Coast slang. It is different in each state on the coast but there is one word that will never change. "Wicked" is a term used in honestly every other sentence that comes out of their mouth. "Wow that was wicked awesome" or "it's wicked cold outside today" are just two phrases I hear all the time. One time I spent so much time with some friends of mine that I started saying wicked. I tried bringing it back to Ohio, it didn't work.
2. Places to visit
All of the states are pretty small on the East Coast so it doesn't take long to travel anywhere. From where I stay in New Hampshire, it only takes us about an hour to get to the beach or even to Boston. The thing I love about the coast is that there are an infinite amount of places to visit. New York City and Boston are two very common cities that my family visits every single time I go, but there are other amazing places to see. Mouth Washington is beautiful, as well as the beaches and Maine.
3. Scenery
Anyone who visits Ohio will say the same thing about it: it's boring, flat, and covered in corn fields. As I traveled through Ohio I didn't think it was that flat or boring at all. When I visited the East Coast for the first time I noticed immediately that there were mountains everywhere. Mountains have become my new best friend and I think I could sit and stare at them for hours and never get bored.
4. People
When I meet new people on the coast, they always ask me if the people in Ohio are super nice. Confused I would always say no, but I now realize what they were talking about. People on the Coast tend to keep to themselves and not go out of their way to make people smile. Not that I'm trying to make them sound like they are all super mean, they just don't go out of their way like most of the people in Ohio. If you make eye contact with someone in Ohio they will smile and say hi. When I make eye contact with someone in New Hampshire they glance away and pretend it never happened. Honestly, though, everyone needs some people like that in their life.
5. The weather
Ah, yes. Although both get all four seasons, the East Coast gets BRUTAL winters. To them it's probably nothing, but to us it's crazy. They will get 2 feet of snow in a day and have it moved out in a couple hours. I love the snow so visiting during the winter is the best. Also, it snows so much that the colleges will close on the East Coast. A ridiculous concept to midwest colleges which never close literally ever.
6. Congested
States on the Coast like I said, are all pretty small. This causes a lot of things and people to be crammed into small spaces. Houses are close together which stinks if you like having a backyard to play in. Personal space is honestly not a thing, and if you need it, I would not recommend NYC subways to you ever.
