I see all these articles posted on social media about the challenges of being a Nursing Major, an Athletic Training Major, a Math Major and so much more. Here are some of the struggles of being a Communications Major! Something I hope other Communications Major appreciate! I am also going to ad gifs, because I feel like college students like gifs lol.
1. You need to know several special media terms that all sound the same.
By that, I mean that every single communications class I take, I need to know special terms like ethnography, ideology, empiricism, and just lots of weird words with weird meanings.
2. I have taken 3 Media & Culture courses, all 3 being completely different.
I mean it, I've taken Media & Culture I and Media & Culture II last year, and this year I am taking Media & Culture Studies. All three are completely different, I had no idea there were so many ways to look at Media & Culture, and it's getting overwhelming and confusing.
3. You have to be social
The last thing you want to do after walking into your 8 am course is get into groups and discuss a topic. Let alone go out in public and try to work on a project which means you have to go film someone or interview someone. But hey, in order to be a Communications Major, you have to communicate.
4. You basically need to own a camera/video camera, and a microphone
Something I learned the hard way is that when you go into college as straight Communications major, you have to take film classes, and some of the assignments do require you to go out and film. If you don't have a camera, a microphone, or a tripod, you need to go rent one from the school. The school only has so many cameras to give out, and on top of that if you get there and all the cameras are checked out, then you are screwed. So basically on top of paying $50,000 a year to go to school, you need to drop an extra $1,000 to get some decent camera gear, no biggie!
5. Group Work
All you do is group work and it feels like an eternity before everyone is able to meet and work on the project and get it done, and then it takes even longer to get the project done!
6. "Your Major is so easy"
You don't see me criticizing your major! So why do you have to criticize mine? Being a Communications Major is hard, and yeah, I may not be a neurosurgeon named Derek Sheppard, but I want to do well in my major, and it takes a lot of work, so that is what makes it hard.
I hope all the Communications Majors appreciate and enjoy this article, and I hope you can relate.
