Summer is a magical time. School is finally out, the family is home, and there's a whole lot of ice cream and chlorine. However, sometimes this can lead to the dreaded BOREDOM (dun dun duuuuuuunnnn!). Here's a (very) short list of things to do this summer that does not involve screens.
1. Ride Bikes.
If you don't know how to ride a bike, learn! It's an essential life skill, especially when you want something to during cool summer evenings. Explore the neighborhood, or drive to a nearby trail and ride! It's a great way to have fun while simultaneously burning calories! A win-win.
2. Play tag or hide-and-go-seek.
This requires more than one person, but a rousing game of freeze-tag or hide-and-go-seek can be a great way to spend an afternoon, especially if you have a large area to play in. And for you people who think you're too old for the game tag, make it more interesting by making a rule that says you need to shout out a song lyric or title before you are tagged if you don't want to be "it".
3. Read a book out loud.
This is especially great for families. Pick a book that everyone will enjoy, and read it out loud to a group, you can even take turns reading, or have someone act it out as you go along!
4. Bake or cook.
Even if you are no culinary master, you can still make new and interesting dishes for your friends and family. To make this project thoroughly non-screened, use a cookbook (yes, one with pages) to make your masterpiece. Making popsicles is also a fun activity for everyone to enjoy, and very easy!
5. Grow some flowers (or rescue a plant).
Start a small indoor garden, or if you have space for an outdoor garden, and use it to grow your favorite herbs, veggies, or even fruits. If you don't have the time for a full garden, just get one plant and care for it. Another option is to go to your local Walmart-like store and look for a plant that needs some TLC. Take it home and try to give it the love it needs! This can be very rewarding but might be a little sad too.
6. Make something artsy.
Whether it's noodles, colored pencils, or watercolors, make something that expresses YOU. This is a great way to use your imagination, and it's also a wonderful de-stressor.
