The love of indie films lies in their producers' creativity, perhaps unhindered by a larger corporation's critical eye. Compared to high-budget, Hollywood movies, indie films have that extra touch of love and care that comes from the producers' passion for the art of filmmaking and their desire to tell a story. Of course, not all indie films can be described as masterpieces--some on this list are questionable--but there's no doubt that artistic expression can wander freely on the screen when indie films are concerned.
Yet, when artistic expression freely wanders, you'll end up with a few 'oddball' choices. However, it's these moments in any film that make us love them enough to affectionately label many "cult classics," which we watch again and again. Fall in love with the following five if you haven't already.
1. True Stories (1986).
As Varicorp Corporation serves as a computer plant, it's easy to recognize the underlying commentary on commercialism, industrialisation, and modern America as a whole. Yet, while there are moments of satire, Byrne also conveys a fair amount of love for the future of technology and progress. So, follow our beloved narrator as he breaks the fourth wall and brings various issues to light through music, comedy, and drama in "True Stories."
2. Punching the Clown (2010).
Full of satire, great humor, and lots of laughs, Punching the Clown is a phenomenal indie film. (Also, by the way, check out Henry Phillip's Youtube channel. He's a great cook.)
3. Rolling Kansas (2003).
"Rolling Kansas" is a good-humored indie film that doesn't need a critical eye whatsoever. If a simple stoner film is what you're looking for, then "Rolling Kansas" has you covered.
4. The Big Lebowski (1998).
Every character, absurd moment, and underlying commentary serves to create a very entertaining black comedy film. There's much to appreciate in "The Big Lebowski," such as the artistic side of its production and the often ridiculous moments The Dude finds himself in.
5. The Toxic Avenger (1984).
Full of uncensored violence, gore, and sexual themes, "The Toxic Avenger" isn't for everyone, but it will absolutely give you a shock. However, it also perfectly fits under the label "It's so bad, it's good," as the acting is cheesy, the characters are cheesy, and the plot is, to an extent, cheesy. Regardless, if you like bad monster movies and don't mind the cheesy-ness, "The Toxic Avenger" might just find a new fan in you.
