5 Oddball Indie Films Meant To Be Seen At 2AM
True Stories by David Byrne

The love of indie films lies in their producers' creativity, perhaps unhindered by a larger corporation's critical eye. Compared to high-budget, Hollywood movies, indie films have that extra touch of love and care that comes from the producers' passion for the art of filmmaking and their desire to tell a story. Of course, not all indie films can be described as masterpieces--some on this list are questionable--but there's no doubt that artistic expression can wander freely on the screen when indie films are concerned.

Yet, when artistic expression freely wanders, you'll end up with a few 'oddball' choices. However, it's these moments in any film that make us love them enough to affectionately label many "cult classics," which we watch again and again. Fall in love with the following five if you haven't already.

1. True Stories (1986).

Directed by David Byrne of famed rock band Talking Heads, "True Stories" is an indie film about Virgil, Texas, a small, yet quickly growing town. In the film, the people of Virgil prepare to celebrate the sesquicentennial anniversary of Texas' independence from Mexico through Varicorp Corporation's sponsored parade and talent show

As Varicorp Corporation serves as a computer plant, it's easy to recognize the underlying commentary on commercialism, industrialisation, and modern America as a whole. Yet, while there are moments of satire, Byrne also conveys a fair amount of love for the future of technology and progress. So, follow our beloved narrator as he breaks the fourth wall and brings various issues to light through music, comedy, and drama in "True Stories."

2. Punching the Clown (2010).

Starring comedic genius Henry Phillips, "Punching the Clown" tells the story of a semi-fictionalized version of Phillips as he struggles to find success in show business. Phillips' eccentric comedy shines against his seemingly unaffected attitude from his monotone voice to his extremely awkward attitude. Regardless, there's something very relatable to the character that is 'Henry Phillips,' who has successfully made a joke out of himself.

Full of satire, great humor, and lots of laughs, Punching the Clown is a phenomenal indie film. (Also, by the way, check out Henry Phillip's Youtube channel. He's a great cook.)

3. Rolling Kansas (2003).

Simply put, "Rolling Kansas" is a stoner film that brings together a group of five friends who want to find the magical forest of marijuana. If they gather a big enough supply from the forest, they could easily sell it and fix their financial problems. With the help of a map left behind by their imprisoned hippie parents, all five get in a car and travel to Kansas (where the magical forest is meant to be), but encounter a whole host of eccentric characters like strippers, cops, and an old man who seemingly just wants to have a good time.

"Rolling Kansas" is a good-humored indie film that doesn't need a critical eye whatsoever. If a simple stoner film is what you're looking for, then "Rolling Kansas" has you covered.

4. The Big Lebowski (1998).

You've seen "The Big Lebowski," I've seen "The Big Lebowki," and if someone hasn't seen "The Big Lebowski," then they have to watch it right now. The Coen brothers have made a number of fantastic films, and this one is easily one of their best. Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski loves bowling and slacking through life, but when a misidentification lands him in the midst of a debacle-d crime scheme, The Dude can't seem to catch a break.

Every character, absurd moment, and underlying commentary serves to create a very entertaining black comedy film. There's much to appreciate in "The Big Lebowski," such as the artistic side of its production and the often ridiculous moments The Dude finds himself in.

5. The Toxic Avenger (1984).

Tromaville is terrorized by bullies, gangs, and criminals--but where's the hero the people of Tromaville need? It's not until Melvin, a weak mop boy, falls into a vat of toxic waste that evildoers learn true fear. His body changes and he becomes taller, stronger, and much more powerful, finally giving the terrorizers a taste of their own medicine.

Full of uncensored violence, gore, and sexual themes, "The Toxic Avenger" isn't for everyone, but it will absolutely give you a shock. However, it also perfectly fits under the label "It's so bad, it's good," as the acting is cheesy, the characters are cheesy, and the plot is, to an extent, cheesy. Regardless, if you like bad monster movies and don't mind the cheesy-ness, "The Toxic Avenger" might just find a new fan in you.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
