If you have not seen the Indie film "Stuck In Love," I highly suggest you gather the girls together, make some popcorn and settle in for a movie night. Though the title may sound cheesy, "Stuck In Love," directed by Josh Boone, is one of the deepest romantic comedies I've seen. There isn't a dull moment in the whole film. The cast is great, the story line is interesting and the soundtrack is amazing! If you have not seen the movie, I'll give you an idea of the plot:
A family of writers, all at different places in their lives, are dealing with the repercussions of love. Bill, the father, is struggling with his wife leaving him. Samantha is in college and feels "cynical," in her own words, toward love, because of her mother leaving. Rusty is still in high school and trying to make a splash while being the sweet, sensitive guy. He finds a girl that he believes he can fix and fall in love with. The movie follows these three as their stories twist within each other's.
I love this movie not only because I can laugh while I cry, but also because the plot is so much deeper than the typical love story. Because Bill raised his children as writers, they see the world so much differently. They see things on such deeper levels than most. I can really connect with this. I feel as though I can really relate to each character in a different way, as I think most could while watching. I have picked out three quotes that I believe really portray the characters and their writing, and have related them to how I see them in my daily life.
"I remember that it hurt. Looking at her hurt."
How many times have you seen an acquaintance, or maybe even a stranger and they look as though they are having a rough time. You may feel compassion toward this person and want to help them, but don't have an idea of how. I believe in life we should look for these people and seek out the one that may need an extra smile or boost of confidence. We should lead lives wanting to help others. This is Rusty's mindset as he watches Kate, a girl in his class, at school, knowing she is having a hard time.
"I could hear my heart beating. I could hear everyone's heart. I could hear the human noise we sat there making, none of us moving, not even when the room went dark."
Bill quotes Raymond Carver, writer of "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love," as he talks about what he thinks love means. When you can feel love, you wouldn't change that feeling for the world. You wouldn't move if that meant leaving that person who holds your heart. Bill believes this as he waits for his wife to return to him so they can continue their love story.
"A realist just sees that face and packs it in with every other pretty girl they've ever seen before. The hopeless romantic becomes convinced that God put them on Earth to be with that one person. But there is no God, and life is only as meaningful as you fool yourself into thinking it is."
This quote is Sam giving Rusty advice. She doesn't believe in love and leads a promiscuous life in place of her feelings. I love this quote because it really does hit the nail on the head talking about the sweet, sensitive guy or "hopeless romantic." Hopeless romantics believe in destiny whereas realists accept life and move along with the tides. I consider myself a hopeless romantic and believe that everything is life has a meaning.
I really hope these three quotes gave you a little slice of the movie and have you considering watching it. You will not regret your decision, and you may even learn something about yourself just as I did.
