My first love has always been writing. It has always been my escape from the real world and its problems. Writing helps me take my daydreams and put them on paper, but writing down what is in your head is harder than you think.
Sometimes I can never seem to get the words right. Sometimes the story I my head gets too complex, and cannot escape my imagination. For years, I just thought that I was a bad writer, but in reality, it happens to everyone. Creating a story takes time and dedication, and the best part about making stories is that there is a bottomless pit of possibilities.
Writing has its own sets of rules when it comes to creative fluidity.
For instance, I have learned that keeping a journal is the best way keep your imagination flowing. I write about anything and everything. One of my hobbies is people-watching. I have a habit of picking out a face in the crowd and create my own back-story for them. I often find myself creating stories about the past, a time before my own. I am often fascinated by the times before technology, and I find ways of making them into stories. Often enough, I get a visit from my vexing foe, writer’s block. I even got it this week when trying to write this exact article.
Writer’s block is one of the worst things that can happen when writing a story. You get stuck trying to break through this wall and it seems like there is no way of breaking it down. When this happens, I take my mind off it. I take up other tasks to fill up my focus. I read a book, clean my room, go to the movies; I even have one of those ‘642 Things to Write About’ journals to keep my mind busy. Every writer has his or her own cure for writer’s block. The real trick is trying to get back to the stories when you have lost your way.
The stories we create should come from our own life experiences. A great writer only writes about what they know. Yes, some writers create stories of magic or far away galaxies, as so on, but the themes of their stories and their characters personalities usually come from what the author has experienced in his or her life. I have written more stories about high school dilemmas more than I care to admit, but for a long time, that was the world I was exposed to. I often find myself writing about my experiences and observations from my own life. It is what I know and it is what I am compelled to write about.
A story is the most influential thing in the world. A story can plant new ideas, inspire, and it can bring people together. A story can be a powerful thing. Creating a story is a demanding task. It takes dedication. The great thing about creating a story is that there really aren’t any rules. Whatever is in your head has the possibility of creating a great story.
