50 Things I Learned My Freshman Year of College

My freshman year of college has finally come to a close- and looking back, I realize I have learned a lot. I'm not the same person that I was when I went to school in August, and I am glad. Not only did I learn a lot in classes, but I learned a lot from the people that I met and the experiences that we shared together. One of the biggest lessons that I learned from one of my professors was that if you pay attention you can learn the most outside of the classroom, and he was right. I know this isn't a catch-all list of absolutely everything you can know about college, but I think it's a start. Besides, no one really knows everything anyways.

1. It's not as scary as you think

2. It's really easy to make friends

3. Naps are your friend

4. Living on the third floor gives you really nice calf muscles

5. Intelligence is attractive

7. Don't be scared of your professors

8. Don't be scared of upperclassmen

9. Coffee is not the best way to keep yourself awake, but you'll drink it anyways

10. If you're lucky, your roommate will be your best friend

18. Your college friends are the best friends you will ever have

19. It's okay to need some alone time

20. You are always going to be making new friends

21. Putting yourself out there is scary, but it usually leads to good things

22. You will have free time to have fun

23. Living in a dorm isn't that bad

24. Yes, finals and midterms are as stressful as people make them out to be

25. Drinking water is so important

26. It's better to get your homework done early instead of at 2 AM

27. But it's okay if you end up doing your homework at 2 AM

28.You're starting over so people are going to take you as you are, so be yourself

29. Remember to take care of yourself

30. Mental health is very, very important. Take care of it

31. You should take classes that have nothing to do with your major

32. Remember to eat your fruits and vegetables

33. Call your parents

34. Writing letters to your friends back home is fun and sentimental

35. You will learn a lot by being friends with the international students

36. Colleges give you a lot of opportunities, don't take advantage of them

37. Don't wear heels to parties

38. Going out is only okay if it doesn't affect your schoolwork

39. This is just the beginning

40. Granola bars are life

41. Always check the weather before you leave for class

42. Remember to set your alarm

43. You will learn something about yourself every day

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
