Serotonin is a chemical produced by cells that send signals between nerve cells.

Serotonin impacts the body from emotions all the way to motor skills. It affects things as simple as sleeping, eating, and digesting, as well as reducing anxiety and depression, increasing bone health, and healing wounds.

In terms of mental health, serotonin boosts and regulates your mood naturally. When the body has normal serotonin levels, you will be happier, calmer, and more focused. Sounds great, right? Here is how you can boost your serotonin:

1. Switch up your diet

Giphy

Many foods contain serotonin in them, as well as tryptophan (the amino acid that serotonin is made from,) such as pineapples, eggs, and cheese. Adding these into your diet will increase the number of amino acids in your body and allow you to create more serotonin.

Tomorrow morning, make yourself a serotonin-boosting breakfast. Cut up some pineapple, scramble some eggs, and pair with some healthy carbs, such as a bowl of oatmeal. Pair this meal with a cup of your favorite coffee, juice, or tea to start your day off right.

2. Go outside

Giphy

Sunlight has been proven to increase serotonin levels. Sunlight may actually be one of the most beneficial sources of serotonin. The vitamin D our bodies get from the sun allows us to convert the tryptophan into serotonin. Even on a cloudy day, getting that natural light will be beneficial for our serotonin levels and mental health.

After you make that yummy breakfast, take it outside and set up a picnic for yourself. Soak in the morning sunshine before it turns 100 degrees and the last thing you want to do is step into the heat.

3. Listen to music

Giphy

Listening to music that makes us happy releases serotonin into our brain to boost our mood. Maybe even have a dance party with friends, or by yourself to some music you love

Of course, at your picnic, you'll need something to listen to. You could always listen to the music of the birds chirping, but if you're like me, I think you'd prefer some Harry Styles or Frank Ocean. Whatever you choose, enjoy the music.

4. Think of positive memories

Giphy

Thinking of the times when you were nothing but happy can release serotonin into your brain to create a positive mood. Focusing on the positive things in our lives can distract us from adverse events going on and increase serotonin production.

After the song you queued, maybe a song that you and your dad listen to before getting onto your favorite rollercoaster comes on. Don't skip it. Listen to that song and reminisce about how happy you guys are before getting on that rollercoaster every year.

5. Exercise

Giphy

So you have finished your breakfast, but you're not quite ready to go back inside yet? Don't. Clear your picnic and get in some exercise. Do some yoga on the picnic blanket, go for a walk, or even a swim.

Trying one or all of these things may help you to become happier and healthier. Take some time from your day to work on you.

Airports

Because the best part of flying isn't the flying.

I’m not sure that many would consider their airport experience to be “fun.” It is either boredom or panic, layovers so long that you forget what the outside world looks like or connections that are made by the skin of your teeth. It is the decision between buying expensive food and starving; it is hunting for outlets (because the airports I’ve been in seem to have about five); it is the stress of making it through security without being that person who holds up everyone else. In short, it is stressful and time-consuming.

New millennial jargon seems to arise everyday, one of the newest being “daddy." While people have always said things like “sugar daddy" or “come to daddy" (which sounds a tad creepy to me...okay, a lot creepy), now just referring to an attractive man or one's boyfriend/husband as simply “daddy" has become the norm. *Gag*

Clarity To Confusion

How I lost my certainty of the future.

Clarity To Confusion

Last year, I knew exactly what I would be doing with my life. Not just what major I wanted, although, I did know exactly what I was going to major in during college. I went further, though, and knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. I aimed to be a book editor and use my French and English majors to go into technical editing after going to grad school. Yet this semester, disenchantment hit. I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life anymore. I still loved the idea of being a book editor. I still loved reading. I just couldn't feel any passion towards the courses I had to take this semester. They were amazing, but they didn't excite me the way courses I would love should. They didn't inspire feelings of amazement at how awesome my major is. It was then I realized maybe my major wasn't for me.

The Procrastination Station At College

We all have checked into "Procrastination Station" more than once..

The Procrastination Station At College
Achieve Center - Wendy Loewen

In high school, being a procrastinator wasn't that big of a deal in my own opinion. But coming from a school that didn't really have strict deadlines on things, meaning you basically got points for turning it in be it exactly on or before the deadline, or 4 weeks later when you realize your grade needs to be raised up. So, when I came to college, I knew it would be different. It hasn't really been hard transitioning into a good student when it comes to out of class work and projects, but it hasn't been that easy either. I will use myself for example. I am enrolled in Introduction to Public Speaking, and it's not that is a hard class, because it isn't, but I just get lost in other things and before I knew it, I had to present a persuasive speech the next day. I also realized this at about 11:15 the night before, and had about half of my outlines done, and my visual aid hadn't been started on. Though I got it done, I promised myself that I would not ever just wait until the last minute with specifically this class, but with any other class also. After that little dilemma, I decided to look for ways that I could get things done in a timely manner. So, here I have listed a few things that I now use in order to get things done before the deadline so that I do not have to rush and worry about it the night before:
