With Halloween coming up very soon, one is not properly in the spirit if you're not telling scary stories around a fire, so here are 5 of them that will definitely do the trick.

1. The Bath Game

Photo by Emily Austin on Unsplash

Originated in Japan, the bath game or Daruma-san is a game in which a player summons a ghost who follows you all day. How cool.

The player is to wash their hair in the bath and repeat the words "Daruma-san fell down" until they are done. washing their hair. A vision is supposed to appear of a woman standing in the bath, falling, and then gouging her eye out on the tap. Once the vision is seen, the player is to keep their eyes shut, ask her why she fell, exit the bathroom, and leave the bath undrained till morning.

The game begins in the morning when the player wakes up. Th player will feel her presence behind them, and she will get closer throughout the day, but the player is to not let her catch them. If she gets too close, the phrase "tomare", meaning "stop", will send her away. If the game is not finished by midnight, she will haunt the players dreams and kill them. To end the same the phrase "kitta", meaning "I cut you lose", is said with a chopping arm motion, the woman will stop following you. I would suggest doing this in private because if you're in public and make a karate chop motion with your arm, you'll look insane. I'm sure Daruma-san will understand.

There's no real logical sense in this game, but it's definitely unsettling.

2. Three Kings Ritual

This ritual is is intended for anyone who wishes to seek answers from the beyond, and involves many steps that must be followed exactly in order and how they are written.

Before the ritual starts, the player needs two large mirrors, three chairs, a fan, a candle, a personal object, a fully charged cellphone, bucket of water, and a partner to supervise. Around 11 PM, the player is to put one chair in the middle and have the other two chairs face the middle chair. These represent the king, queen, and the fool, but who is who is for the player to figure out. The player should be able to just barely see their own reflection though their peripheral vision. The bucket of water should be placed in front of the player, the fan placed behind the middle chair so when the player begins the game, their body will block the air flow. The fan is to be turned on and the player needs to leave the room with the door open. At exactly 3:30 AM the player needs to wake up and be seated in their seat by exactly 3:33 AM. If the door is closed shut, abort mission. If the fan is turned off, abort mission. Or if it is past 3:33 and the player is not seated, abort mission. If any of these occur, the player and their partner are to leave their house until and not return until 6 AM. If everything is successful, (the players partner is sitting outside, fan is on, door was closed, lights are off) then the ritual is ready to start. The player will sit in their chair, holding a lit candle in their lap, and wait for whatever happens next. If there are any questions the player has, now is the time to ask them. They will often be answered in the form of new questions. It's believed the shadow figures in the mirrors represent the left and right sides of your brain. One side may seem more rational and the other more erratic, and they will bicker with each other. Once it is 4:34, and your body is somehow moved, the candle should be put out, ending the game. If this does not happen, your partner needs to call you or enter the room to end the game. Whatever happens, by the end the player should know who the fool is.

3. Hooded Man Ritual

Photo by John Cobb on Unsplash

In this game, the player is trying to call a cab. You know, the type that take you to alternate dimensions and are driven by an ominous man in a hood.

The game is to be played at night, and can only be played alone. The player needs an old rotary phone and two long black cords. I guess the spirit world hasn't upgraded their technology because if you attempt this ritual with a cell phone, it will not work. The player is to count to 13, and then dial the number 20496888. Count to 13 again and place the handset back. Now the player is to say into the phone "Hello? I need a cab." Now the first black cord is to be replaced by the second one. If done correctly there should be a cab outside waiting for you. Bring a watch and then enter the cab. It should be empty, for now. The player is to fall asleep and wake up at 3:30 AM. If it is earlier or later than 3:30, the ritual was done wrong and the player is to exit the cab immediately and be inside in 2 minutes. If done right, the cab will be on the highway and a hooded man will be driving. If the player attempts to speak to the hooded man or lift his hood, the player will wake up in their bed. Attempting to get out of the cab at this point or speaking to any other passengers that get in the cab is fatal. To end the game, the player must whisper in the ear of the hooded man that they have reached their destination. The player is welcome to stay in the cab for as long as they want, but as the ride continues, the worlds get more absurd and difficult to get out of and nobody knows what happens when the cab stops. When you are back home, go back to the telephone and dial number 200082, and say "thank you for the ride". Spirits still appreciate good manners, you know. Remove the cord and burn the two you used. Then use sage to cleanse your house. Skipping the cleansing part can result in entities following you from the cab ride, and that would totally suck.

4. Elevator Game

The elevator game is another way someone can enter a different dimension, if the hooded man creepy taxi game just wasn't your thing.

Multiple people are allowed play in this ritual, but it can also be played alone (preferably at night so other people do not interrupt the game). To start, a building with at least ten floors and a working elevator will be needed. Get on at the first floor and go to the 4th floor, then the 2nd floor, 6th, 2nd, 10th, 5th. A woman should walk in, but under no circumstances must any of the players look or speak to her, she is not what she appears. Now press the 1st floor button. If the elevator descends down to the first floor, the players must leave immediately and not look back. If the elevator ascends to the 10th floor, the players may exit the elevator and not respond to the woman if she asks where they are going. To know that the other world has been reached, there will be no lights, technology will not work, the world will be completely empty, and the only thing you will be able to see from the windows is a red cross in the distance. To return home, the players must go to the same elevator and press the same buttons. It is possible to mix up which elevator was used, so always be wary. If all goes well, the elevator will descend down to the first floor and the game is over.

5. Midnight Man

Photo by Bruno Kelzer on Unsplash

Ah yes, another game involving summoning a terrifying demon. This ritual also allows for multiple people to play, so at least you won't die alone.

To start, everyone that is playing must write their names on a piece of paper. Then use a pin needle to poke their finger and drop the blood onto the paper that has your name on it (each use a separate pin needle). Next, place the paper in front of a wooden door ( it must to be made from wood or the game will not work). Then light a candle and knock on the door 22 times. The 22nd knock has to be at exactly 12:00am or the game will not work. Open the front door, blow out your candle, and then close the door. Congrats you have now summoned the Midnight Man. You need to immediately relight your candle. The goal for the rest of the game is to survive the Midnight man. Everyone who is playing must walk around the house with their candle lit, avoiding the Midnight man at all times until it is 3:33 AM, that's when the Midnight Man leaves and the game will be over. If the candle blows out on its own, the Midnight Man is near and you have ten seconds to relight your candle. If you don't relight your candle in ten seconds then you must surround yourself with a circle of salt and wait until 3:33 AM. If this is not done in time, the Midnight Man will attack and you will have hallucinations until 3:33.

So there you have it, 5 very family friendly games to play this spooky season !!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
