When you think of a Disney animated feature, what comes to mind? Maybe "Frozen?" "The Lion King?" What about "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs?" The fact of the matter is that no matter who you are. you have a favorite Disney film, but there are so many to choose from. So many, in fact, that some of the best are typically overlooked. Here are the top five most underrated Disney Movies:
5. "The Lion King II: Simba's Pride"
OK, this may be a sequel but it's an amazing, beautiful, awesome story line that can stand on its own. The plot follows Simba's daughter, Kiara, as she figures out who she wants to be in life and as a future queen. The conflict of the story comes from her relationship with a lion named Kovu, who is Scar's adopted son. Which means that Kovu and Kiara are forbidden from being together. This movie is very Romeo and Juliet-esque, and the musical score is A+. The opening number is actually a song that is in "The Lion King" on Broadway, "He Lives in You." So all in all, I would go as far as to say just as good, if not better, as the first one.
4. "The Rescuers"
This movie pulls on your heart strings and sends you on a journey like no other. The plot follows two mice who are agents for the Rescue Aid Society which helps those in need. When a message in a bottle is found by the society, Bernard and Miss Bianca go into action to save an orphan girl named Penny who has been kidnapped. While most Disney animated features have elaborate musical numbers, the Rescuers shies away from that. But at times, the background music does exactly what it is meant to do by pulling the audience in and connecting them on an emotional level. You will 99.9 percent shed a tear or two for Penny.
3. "Atlantis: The Lost Empire"
It truly baffles me how little people appreciate the greatness that is "Atlantis: The Lost Empire." First of all, it's a movie that revolves around finding a mythological city, and usually, those are always fantastic. And this movie took an entirely new and creative twist on the lost city. The plot follows a man named Milo, who dreams of finishing what his grandfather started and find the lost city of Atlantis. When Milo finds something that sparks others' interest, he joins a group on an expedition of a lifetime. What follows is both thrilling and mind-blowing, and will probably make you want to go uncover a lost city or two. "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" takes an old myth and makes it new. It's truly Disney at its best
2. "Oliver and Company"
If you have never heard of this movie, please close this article and go forth and find it. This movie is fantastic for so many reasons. First off, Billy Joel voices one of the main characters and sings a main song. Billy. Freaking. Joel. Secondly, it's just really good. The plot follows Oliver, a precious, little orange kitten who was never adopted and is now left to fend for himself on the streets of New York. Then, he meets a dog named Dodger (Billy Joel) and is welcomed in by his gang of dogs. Eventually, a rich girl falls in love with Oliver and adopts him, but that's not where the story ends for our main character. "Oliver and Company" shows the easy lifestyle of high society New York, and also the scary, hard life. It's a really great movie.
1. "The Princess and the Frog"
Oh, you've heard of this movie, you say? You've seen this princess in Disney World? Well, tell me about the story line, please. Tell me about the cinematography. You can't? My point exactly. "The Princess and the Frog" is a well-known name, and Tiana may be a well-known princess, but for whatever reason this animated movie does not get as much credit as it deserves. The plot line follows Tiana, a hardworking waitress in New Orleans who dreams of owning her own restaurant one day. When a prince gets cursed by the Voodoo King, she kisses him to turn him into a human again, but the curse is instead reversed. Now the two are frogs, and have to figure out a way home. First of all, the music is phenomenal. The album ranges from jazz, to even a gospel sound. And when watching this movie, sometimes the pictures that were created were so perfect and beautiful I forgot I was watching an animated movie. And then there's the characters: Ray, Mama Odie, Naveen, Charlotte. This movie literally has everything it needs to become a perfect Disney classic, and yet people overlook it. It's truly sad. Also Ne-yo has this really fire song in the credits that people literally never know about. In a word, underrated.
