Eating in college is difficult, with options being limited, and those that are given are not necessarily nutritious or delicious. Having eating limitations makes it all the more difficult. Here are some tips to ease the struggle of avoiding gluten restrictions.
1. Keep snacks in your room
Whether it be popcorn or fruit, always think ahead. Having a small stash of food that can curve your cravings when the food options given to you aren't ideal will help to ease your fear of hunger.
2. Look at the menu
Before going to the dining hall closest to you, make sure to check the menu before walking over. You will be able to plan ahead, as well as avoid certain food items!
3. Don't be shy
Although this may feel awkward, avoiding the consequences after your meal is a necessity. Ask the chef if the options are gluten free, and if not, ask if they have gluten free options in place. Better to be safe than sorry!
4. Prepare
Always think ahead. If you are going out to a new restaurant with friends, or trying a new food, look at the menu beforehand, or bring something with you that you know you can eat. Don't be the only one sitting without food because you failed to think ahead.
5. Cook
Whenever possible, cook for yourself! Although this may be difficult in college, cooking assures that you won’t have any cross-contamination, as well as creating options you wouldn’t have at a dining hall or restaurant.
