When working with kids, there are some important points to remember. Now, this article is not meant to discourage our future moms, child care providers, teachers, nannies or anyone else who is planning on working with children in the future. This article is to help those who want to work with children. So if you are or are planning to work with children, this article is for you and here are a few helpful tips.
Be patient, patience is key when working with kids.
There is no need to get yourself worked up or frustrated with the child or children you are working with. Children tend to have a short attention span and they get distracted easily. It is important to understand that children cannot work in a large group for over 10 minutes because of this. So if the children are not listening or paying attention, try reading a familiar book to them and that will hopefully get them to focus on you once again.
Repetition, repetition, repetition, what again! Yes again!
Sometimes children do not understand the first time, so it's important to repeat yourself. Take a deep breath and do it again. Repression is the mother of learning and is an essential key to the physical development of a child's brain. As you repeat words or actions, it helps the child remember. So be patient and repeat the task at hand.
Understand the child.
Children learn by watching others around them, "monkey see, monkey do." A child acts a certain way by observing others. Before you label a child's behavior as bad or wrong try to think about why they are "acting out". Always ask yourself why they are doing this before correcting them, it will help you to understand how to confront the child and adjust their actions.
Teach hands on.
Hands on teaching is the best way a child learns. Hands on learning is a great way to keep children occupied and engaged in the task at hand. This is because it gives children a task to do while you're teaching. An example of this is finger painting while teaching a child about colors and shapes. This allows them to fully comprehend their basic colors and shapes. Having a child draw a red triangle with red paint helps them remember the color red and what shape a triangle is.
Routine is important, too.
Routines give children a sense of security. A normal routine with a child helps maintain a healthy lifestyle. Routines help kids understand what is coming next in their day, helps with a sense of familiarity and teaches kids how to take charge of their own activities. It is important to always introduce children to new activities and many children are afraid of the unfamiliarity or "new" activities so if you surround their day with things they know it makes it easier to introduce them to "new" activities.
While there is a lot to remember when working with kids, they also bring a lot of happiness and are a joy to work with. They can make you laugh, proud, and thankful. There is always somethings to learn each day and you're always kept on your toes. It's a humbling experience and hopefully these few tips will help the ones who eventually want to work with kids.
