5 Things You Can Do If You Feel Helpless in the Wake of Police Brutality

1. Write Your Congressmen and Women

You can also write letters to your mayors, governors, and police departments. Whether you handwrite it or you type and double print- these letters matter. You can write about needing more police training, needing body cams, changing procedure, doing sensitivity training, needing more minority officers, whatever you want--write about it. Voice your opinion, send letters and be heard.

2. Write to the Legislature

If you are looking to write about Justice for Alton Sterling of Baton Rouge, LA

If you are looking to write about Justice for Phillando Castle of Falcon Heights, MN

If you are looking to write about justice for Pedro Erik Villanueva in Fullerton, CA or for Dylan Noble of Fresno, California.

If you'd like to write to the California Highway Patrol department, responsible for killing Pedro Erik Villanueva, about their policy of dressing in plain clothes and pursuing suspects and shooting without identifying themselves, here's a link to their page. They currently have a community service survey open and are asking for responses.

3. Donate to the Victims Families

4. Stage and Attend Protests and Rallies

We as Americans are granted the right to free assembly. Demonstrate this right and attend protests or stage your own. Die In's are very impactful and smaller scale protests that can be done in any public space or in private spaces and you can always record or photograph your demonstrations and share to show solidarity and support for those rallying in the streets.

5. Volunteer

Youth programs, women's shelters, homeless shelters, job training centers, anti recidivism agencies, programs for at risk youth, disaster relief, fair housing agencies, soup kitchens, food pantries, medical clinics, courtwatch and so many other outreach programs are always in need of volunteers. You can go to your village or town hall or do a quick internet search of a cause that interests you, and you'll be astounded at how many organizations need volunteers. Spending a little bit of your time with driven individuals dedicated to service can do wonders for your spirit.

6. Show Humanity

If someone is hurting and is scared, be there for them. If you are hurting or are scared, know that your feelings are justified and they are okay. Show humanity when you see people who are tired, frustrated, and in mourning. These events are traumatic not only for the victims and their family members but for those who identify with those communities and for those who've been victims of violence and police brutality before. These events are hard to process and they are triggering for some. When blacks in America are asking for police to stop killing them, listen.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
