Every Valentine's Day, a common thread sends through social media and small chat. That thread is the increasingly annoying negativity around the holiday itself. "Singles Awareness Day" some call it with self-pity, while others will ramble on for far too long about how it was an invented holiday to boost Hallmark sales after the Christmas rush. These complaints are valid if one views the holiday as just a day for romance.
However, that's not what it is. It's a day for love, in every shape and form it comes in, and celebrating that love in the most outward way possible.
1. It's the love holiday, not the couples holiday
Do you only ever say "I love you" to a significant other? No? Then it's okay to call your grandma to wish her a happy Valentine's Day or to email your Amazon Delivery Driver to do the same.
But honestly, you should email him anyway because you really don't know where you'd be without them in your life. Seriously, if you love anyone, not even romantically, you should remind them of your love on Valentine's Day.
2. A day you can give gifts to anyone
No matter if they are big or small, Valentine's Day is the perfect day for giving gifts to anyone you care about. And who cares that most gift bags are covered in pink and red hearts? They are cute bags and your dad, your friends, and your dog will love opening a present from them.
3. Remember those little cards you gave out in elementary school?
Yep, those are still cute. If you don't have a lot of money on Valentine's and still want to do something for all those you care about, go to the dollar store and pick up a couple packs of the cheesiest theme they have. All your friends will love getting a PlayHouse Disney theme Valentine from a show they had never seen.
4. Leslie Knope the entire day!
We all know that Leslie Knope is the queen of all, but she definitely has holidays and positive attitudes down. So, if this Valentine's Day, you are feeling lonely solely because you don't have a sweetie to kiss, think about going to get waffles with all your closest gals and celebrating that way. Honestly, at the end of the day, what's better? Waffles or romance?
5. There are so many discounts the next day
If you still aren't convinced on how great Valentine's Day is, think of the one positive that even avid haters of the celebration even can't argue. February 15th will have great sales on every chocolate in the store, and whether you are single, taken, or flirting, we can all enjoy in some highly discounted sweets.
