During my ongoing career as a radio host for our university's internet radio program, I've learned a lot being the host and sole creator for my own show. Coming from someone who hates public speaking and stutters constantly, hosting a show ranging from minimum thirty minutes to beyond has definitely been a challenge! Here are some of the things I've learned from this experience:
1. The insane awkwardness of leaving the microphone on
Leaving the mic on to pick up on the silent awkwardness of you not speaking or just hearing you breathe or do whatever in the room by accident.
2. Accidentally cursing into the mic
Frowned upon by your supervisors, it can be an easy mistake, especially if you do #1. Very regrettable.
3. Having a nice manager is everything
Having a manager who you can bounce around ideas with and forgive #2, is very valuable. Especially one who knows how about promotion and can help advertise yourself.
4. Playing the wrong song
If you're like me and you want to fill your awkwardness with music, you can play from a selection of songs. However, if you're like me and you chose the wrong song it will haunt you forever. Not that your viewers will know...but you'll know.
5. The disgust of hearing yourself talk constantly
Having to record your shows and hear your own voice on the regular. The annoying rambling you really didn't want to hear....
Although it's definitely been an adjustment to create a show every week, I think speaking for a radio show has definitely been a positive experience! I've learned a lot about public speaking and social media and I'm excited to see my show in the future.
