5 Things Going On In America Besides The Election
The New York Times

With all the talk of the newly announced presidency swarming our social media, it’s easy to get caught up in the drama. The negativity spreads like a wildfire and I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels like they just want to read about ANYTHING but the election. Well, your prayers have been answered! Here are 5 things going on in America besides the election!

1. Galaxy Devours Two Other Galaxies

The Hubble Space Telescope captured images of a galaxy EATING two other galaxies. Yeah, that’s right. Hubble captured images of the galaxy known as NGC 1222 swallowing up two smaller dwarf galaxies that might’ve strayed too close to it. While not much is currently known about the situation, it looks as if a new star could be forming as a result. Either way, the pictures are gorgeous. Take a look at the full article here.

2. Workers in Colorado use toilet paper to repair roads.

People are taking the art of TP-ing houses to another level. You read that right, in Colorado workers used toilet paper to repair cracks in the road. They say that the toilet paper helps absorb the oil after laying tar down. You do you, Colorado. Don’t worry we’ll only laugh a little.

3. The couple formerly known as Brangelina decides who gets the kids.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are the proud parents of six children who range in age from 8 to 15. The couple’s recent divorce has sent the public into shock and raise this question... Who gets the kids? Well look no further, Jolie will continue to have custody of the children while Pitt gets joint-custody… for now, that is. The agreement has not been finalized in the divorce papers and may not be the final arrangement, but so far Pitt doesn’t seem to have a problem with it.

4. A serial killer left some odd product reviews on Amazon.

A South Carolina serial killer may have given himself up by leaving suspicious reviews on products he bought off of Amazon. “Haven’t stabbed anyone yet. When I do it, it’ll be with a quality tool like this,” was left on a rubber handled knife. “Solid locks, have 5 on a shipping container… won’t stop them… but sure will slow them down until they’re too old to care.” was left as a review to some high-security padlocks. “Keep in the car for when you have to hide the bodies” was left on a shovel review. After recent investigation, a woman’s remains were found on his property. Here’s the full article.

5. The Birds And The Bees… Without The Bees

Haven’t you noticed the abundance of bees this year? Yeah, me either. Who’s to blame? Once again, mankind. So here’s the buzz, honeybee’s in America can’t seem to get it on. Yeah, you heard me right. Unfortunately, this isn’t something that a little blue pill can fix. Chemicals used in agricultural farming have been proven to disturb the process of reproduction for these little guys. While they might be a pest sometimes, they play a key role in the survival of all living creatures. Not to scare anyone, but if these little guys die off, so will we. Talk about a major buzz kill. (ba-dum-sss) Check out the full article here.

So while you might feel that the election has basically taken over your life, maybe you could look into these other events going on in America and contribute to them instead! Because let’s face it, a protest about bees seems way more entertaining than one about politics.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
