5 Things To Do Instead of Netflix

For when Netlix & Chill gets a bit tiring

5 Things To Do Instead of Netflix

As a self-proclaimed Netflix addict, I completely understand the word's obsession with the online streaming service. There is rarely day that goes by without me spending some quality Netflix and chill time. I watch before I got to bed, with friends, while I'm getting ready, when I'm tired, when I'm bored, pretty much all the time. Among crazy class, work, and club schedules, the time I watch Netflix is often the only time of the day I relax. I love the drama of Grey's Anatomy, the shenanigans of the Office, and all of the sassy remarks of New Girl. Netflix is a major part of my life, to the point that watching regular TV is often a struggle. Commercials and having to wait a week for the next episode? No thank you.

So like I said, I really truly do love Netflix. However, recently, I've been thinking of all the time I spend on Netflix and what I could be doing instead. As great and relaxing as Netflix is, it also has the ability to become quite isolating. Even if you're watching with someone else, chances are you're not really talking or having any meaningful interaction. While I still plan on watching quite a bit of Netflix a week, I'm choosing to reserve some of my time for other things, with the intent of creating a more well-rounded me.

Here are 5 of those things I'm going make more time for:

1. Exercising

Lace up those running shoes, go on the day hike, just get up and go

2. Brunch (or really any meal with friends)

Going out for a nice meal can be quite needed, especially when you survive on dining hall food. Bonus: you get to hang out with all those cool people you call best friends and actually talk. If you're feeling extra ambitious, leave your phones behind too.

3. Exploring

We live in this great, big, beautifully breathtaking world, and yet we often choose to view it from behind a computer screen. So plan a weekend road trip or even just a day to explore your city. You'll most likely be astonished at all the coolness you were missing.

4. Reading

As college kids, we often forget that reading doesn't solely pertain to textbooks. Try reading for enjoyment sometime, you might even find that you like it more than TV.

5. DIYing

We all watch HGTV and post all over DIY and Craft Pinterest board. Try actually accomplishing one of those projects for a change.

I'll be trying to accomplish all of these things and more over the next few months (and probably still binging on Netflix from time to time).

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
