We're about to go on Thanksgiving break, but Finals will be right around the corner when we come back! Here are some things to keep in mind after the break is over!
1) Make sure you have your study snacks and space!
You can have some comfort snacks like chips, popcorn, candy and hot chocolate! Sometimes we need comfort to cope with the stress (sad face). But energy foods like nuts, granola, and fruit can help invigorate your brain and study time more efficient! If you're eating meals such as breakfast or lunch, try not to study. Treat it as a break!
As for space, know where you can focus the best. If you love studying in the library, head there! If your residence hall has some study areas, even better! If you prefer to stay in your room, declutter your study area as much as possible and keep it organized so that you don't feel more stressed!
2) Know your exam dates/times intimately.
You should know it like your own phone number. I'm one of those people who forgets things easily because I have so much stuff going on! Some of you already do this, but you never know what might happen. Locations are super important, too, especially if it's a departmental exam!
3) Schedule your study time!
After learning the dates of your exams, next is planning your study time! I know this sounds exhilarating and not anxiety-inducing, but it is necessary. I recommend doing this before Thanksgiving break. Not only are you mentally preparing yourself, but you will feel a little less stressed about it when you start. It's all about preparation.
4) Get as much sleep and relaxation as possible!
For some people, all-nighters are probably inevitable. But if you can focus on what you need to do, and plan accordingly, then you should be getting a decent amount of sleep during the week, plus a nap here in there.
Actually, an ample amount of sleep increases memory retention and enhances recall. That means that the right amount of sleep will help you when it comes to studying! Everyone schedule is different, so do what you can! Hopefully, you can avoid all-nighters with this next tip...
5) Time management is key!!
I think in some past college lifestyle articles I've stressed this (no pun intended), but it is super important! Especially if you have special projects, conferences, and what not coming up, you need to be on it! Go to your professor when you need to, utilise study sessions, and most of all, know when to take a break.
If you go five straight hours studying non-stop, I guarantee you will not retain a lot of information -- especially if you are doing an all-nighter. Distributed practice (studying) is the most effective way to study according to a lot of psychology sources. It's shorter, less intensive and allows more freedom to do other things when not studying. And who doesn't want to get a decent amount of sleep before an exam?
Another important tip: please enjoy the Final Exams memes. They are timely and always welcome.
Hold onto this article when we come back from break! Until then, enjoy your holiday!
