I, as an English major, love poetry, and I have taken on the challenge of getting other people to love poetry. This is a tough feat when your favorite poem is terribly controversial and four pages long. It is unsurprising that few people get as excited about poetry as I do; however, technology allows poetry to be so much easier to hear. Spoken Word is a movement that has been slowly catching on - between Macklemore advocating for it or the poetry competitions that sweep schools, it is so easily accessible. Although YouTube is riddled with a lot of good poetry, I picked five of my favorites to share:
1. George Watsky - I Love You
2. Denise Frohman - Dear Straight People
3. Taylor Mali - What Teachers Make
4. Dia Davina - In Between
5. George Watsky - Drunk Text Message to God
Poetry may still elicit groans from the back of the classroom, but there is so much more to poetry than Eliot, Poe and Wordsworth. The human experience has always been kept in the lines of poetry, but with technology at our fingertips, it's easy to share those experiences with people all over the world.
