Let’s be real, music can often paint women in a not-so-flattering light. We are depicted as single-faceted objects meant for conquest. However, the tides have been changing for the better, and many female artists are calling the music industry on its B.S. Here are five songs to add to your “I’m a Boss” playlist and flex like Rosie the Riveter:
1. "Hard Out Here" by Lily Allen.
Known for her tongue-in-check, unapologetic lyrics, Allen does not disappoint in this single from her 2014 album, "Sheezus." It attacks body image and entertainment industry pressure, just to name a few targets, and has a chorus that will stay in your head for the rest of the day.
2. "Salute" by Little Mix.
It seems that every girl group is putting out their version of a female anthem, and Little Mix is no exception. I found that I liked this one the most, because it truly was inclusive and was about celebrating all the great things women do, in heels, sneakers or boots.
3. "Sorry" by Beyonce.
Let’s be honest, Beyonce’s feminist anthems will withstand the test of time. Here is a song from "Lemonade," the album that nearly made the Earth reverse rotation. I dare you to not blast this all the way up in your car. I also dare you to not think about how small Jay Z felt after listening to this – six inches, perhaps?
4. "Sucker" by Charli XCX.
Although made famous by Igloo — I mean Iggy Azalea, Charli XCX is actually a killer songwriter. This song comes from her sophomore album, and calls out a man who wanted to get with her just to further his own career. It's pure '90s bubblegum, with an Alanis Morissette bite.
5. "On My Mind" by Ellie Goulding.
Call this a call-out. This is Ellie calling out Ed Sheeran for his slightly scathing “Don’t” single from 2014. She stood up for herself, and some would say, exposed the double standard women are compared to when it comes to casual relationships.
