"Hey, have you ever heard the song called 'Gravity' by John Mayer?"
My first time listening to John Mayer's music was three years ago with the song called "Gravity." I had never known anything about this guy named John Mayer before, and I wish I knew him when I was a kid. Even since the song "Gravity" came into my ears, I became addicted to John Mayer's music. I started to listen to his music more and more. I finally purchased the album, "Continuum," which is I personally think is the best album of Mayer.
I also started to play and cover his song on piano and guitar, and it was mind opening with a new music style that I had never played before. Yes, I was inspired to play blues music on guitar and piano. John Mayer's music always makes me want to learn blues/jazz guitar. I have been learning and playing blues guitar for three years because of John Mayer. I never get tired of listening to the same songs and playing the same riffs, because I call it as practice.
Well, I am a guitarist and pianist who's obsessed with John Mayer's music. I have found out five things about myself to be true every time I listen to John Mayer's music.
1. You will always want to play along.
You know how hard the song "No Such Thing" from the album "Room For Squares" is to play? I would never recommend any new guitar players learn this song until they've played guitar for more than two years. I've played guitar since I was 10 years old, and I am still struggling with this song. I started to learn this song two years ago, and always wonder when I am going to be able to play this without looking at chords. It's hard, but I never give up. Every time I listen to "No Such Thing," I always pick up my acoustic guitar and play along. Many guitarists probably do the same as me.
2. You will repeatedly listen to one of John Mayer's songs more than a thousand times.
"Slow Dancing In a Burning Room" — I am really into this song. I remember "Slow Dancing In a Burning Room" was on the Top 25 Most Played on my iPod. I just can't stop listening to this song. Gosh, I can't resist.
3. You probably listen to Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
John Mayer's music is inspired by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix. Many guitarists know that. John Mayer rearranged the song "Bold As Love," which is originally played by Jimi Hendrix. I literally just got into Stevie Ray Vaughan because I listened to John Mayer played "Pride and Joy" on SRV Tribute 2015. If you like John Mayer's music, I would recommend you to listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix.
4. You will be in love with Fender Stratocaster.
If you play "Gravity" on Stratocaster in front of the mirror, you play solo blues riffs, you probably can be John Mayer, LOL.
John Mayer mostly uses a Fender Stratocaster as his main guitar. I used an Epiphone Les Paul before I decided to sell it and buy a Fender Stratocaster because of John Mayer. Guess what? I fell in love with my Strat — not because of John Mayer, but because of its versatility. I am able to play all kinds of music on it, especially blues.
5. Lastly, you are probably waiting for John Mayer's new album.
I need to listen to the John Mayer Trio again! I don't have any expectations of how John's music is going to be. But after listening to the album "Continuum" a million times, I would say John Mayer's new album that collaborates with Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino is going to be great and awesome.
