In the age of streaming services (and illegal downloads) we have a plethora of shows and movies to watch always at our fingertips. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video, HBO Now, etc, etc, etc -- we have nearly unlimited options when we're at home on a Saturday night, alone with a bottle of wine and our sweatpants. "You want to watch a gritty crime drama about a mother avenging her child? Well, here are forty-seven options we have tailor-made for you."
Streaming is great. And it's a great way to watch shows and movies you otherwise wouldn't be able to watch shows that are older or shows that you missed the first few seasons of and just want to catch up on. One of the best parts about streaming, I think, is that you can watch whatever episode you want, whenever you want. If you have a favorite episode of something, you can needle-in-a-haystack it out of whatever season it's in and watch away.
Another really great part about having endless shows and movies to choose from 24/7 is that you can watch things that are tailored to the mood you're in. Happy? Here's a rom-com. Sad? Here's another romcom. Want to be scared? Here are ten different horror movies that are equally predictable. Want to cry? Here are Sophie's Choice and Titanic -- take your pick. I really love that you can turn on the television or open your laptop when you're in a bad mood and instantaneously find something to watch to cheer you up.
That said, here are five shows to watch when you're feeling down:
1. "New Girl" (Fox) -- Available on Netflix and Hulu
"New Girl" is quirky, funny, ridiculous, and campy and almost always cheers me up when I'm feeling down. The show follows the life of Jessica Day, played by Zooey Deschanel, after she moves in with four male roommates she finds on Craig's List. Jess is the peppiest, most innocent and precious character that's ever been portrayed on television, in m opinion, and the constant clash of weird personalities between the roommates is something that will leave you laughing until you cry.
Episode that ALWAYS makes me feel better: Season 2, Episode 5 - "Models"
2. "Friends" (NBC) -- Available on Netflix
All of the reasons to watch friends are pretty obvious, but I will point out that it is one of, if not the, best sitcom ever made. It's hilarious; it's worth watching all ten seasons; it can be watch in or out of order with no problems, and it never fails to put a smile on my face. I've seen the whole series three times and I can still find something new to laugh at.
Episodes that ALWAYS make me feel better: Season 5, Episode 11 -- "The One with All the Resolutions" and Season 5, Episode 16 -- "The One with the Cop"
3. "Adventure Time" (Cartoon Network) -- Available on Hulu
I was introduced to "Adventure Time" a few years ago by my best friend and I honestly didn't like it at first. I've never been much of a cartoon person. I mean, I loved them as a kid but the older I got, the less I liked looking at moving drawings. However, since going to college, I've come to appreciate a good take-your-mind-off-everything cartoon, and "Adventure Time" is the perfect choice. It's lighthearted and hopeful, and also full of great examples of friendship and happiness, and I don't think you can ask for much more. Plus: it is so fun to look at.
Episodes that ALWAYS make me feel better: Literally all of them. Especially any with Shelby Butterson, the pink worm.
4. "Bob's Burgers" (Fox) -- Available on Netflix and Hulu
"Bob's Burgers" is one of those shows that almost makes you uncomfortable, but in a good way. The pacing of the humor leaves room for you to awkwardly soak up the jokes and allow yourself to adjust to the amount of awkwardness you're feeling before being slapped with another oddly uncomfortable joke (still in a good way). The show is funny, dry, witty, and highly relatable in ways you wouldn't imagine. And it's great at taking your mind off of all the important, boring things.
Episode that ALWAYS makes me feel better: Season 2, Episode 3 -- "Synchronized Swimming"
5. "Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp" -- Available on Netflix
This show is so ridiculous and entertaining, it was hard for me to turn it off. The best part about it is that very obvious forty and fifty year-olds are playing teenagers and seeing Paul Rudd play the jerk of the classic 80's-style teen-flick genre is something I never knew I needed. This is another show that makes you uncomfortable, but in a good way. It has classic SNL-style humor, Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, and its the satire of all satires. Happy camping.
Episodes that ALWAYS make me feel better: Again, all of them.
