As a woman with multiple tattoos, I've heard every comment in the book in regards to what I have decided to put on my body. People think you will fail because of a star on your shoulder or script on your arm. While I know these people speak only out of ignorance, these comments irritate me, and for a long time, they angered me. However, I've learned that the opinions of those people don't matter, and my responses have become consistent the many of the insults thrown my way.
1. Your body is a temple, you shouldn't put that "stuff" on it.
Show me one temple that isn't covered in art. My temple will be decorated to the nines. Next.
2. You will never get a good job like that.
Welcome to the 21st century, it's time to catch up. I know teachers that have tattoos, as well as lawyers, and many businessmen and women. This should not be the first thought you have when you see a person with tattoos.
3. You'll look like a "hoodlum."
What? This is actually something I heard when I first expressed my desire to get a tattoo. People stereotype tattoos with another awful stereotype, so again, I say welcome to the 21st century.
4. You'll regret that in 10 years.
Actually, I won't. I put a lot of thought into anything I do that is permanent. Each tattoo has a special meaning and that will never change.
5. Imagine how you will look when you're 60.
Like a bada**. That's how I will look. I will be covered in beautiful things that represent important times in my life.
A tattoo is a piece of art that we consciously decide to put on our bodies. Do not judge another based on the ink they have, or the way they look at all, for that matter. Each tattoo tells a story; instead of judging someone by the ink, take some time to learn what each one means. In doing this, you will learn the heart and soul of someone you once judged.
