In case you weren't aware, it's the month of February aka the month of love...or so the Hallmark industry believes. Don't get me wrong, I am not one of those bitter single people who watches romantic comedies and eats ice cream on Valentine's Day. However in my opinion, Valentine's Day is a holiday exacerbated by Hallmark and made large to produce money. So, here are five reasons why Valentine's Day may make you bitter.
1. One word...PDA
Couples that are very open about their intimate life are annoying enough. But for some reason on Valentine's Day, they think it's okay to be even more affectionate in public. They're also the couple that feels the need to make out in the hallway as everyone walks by. These are the kind that make me question some peoples' common sense.
2. Social media "couple-y" posts
You know exactly what I am referring to. Those couples who post a photo of their significant other and type out a paragraph about their feelings towards them. That is the kind of thing that should be written in a card, love letter or even a text. Something between the two of you...not you two and the rest of the world.
3. Complaints from single people
If they don't post about it on social media, they'll complain about it enough in person for you to be more than aware of what is going on. These are also the people that label Valentine's Day as "Single's Awareness Day." The ones that whine and whine to you about how they are "forever lonely" and fish for compliments from everyone. You may think that this is just a girl thing, but trust me...it isn't.
4. Gifts, gifts, gifts!!!!
Somehow, a historical holiday has become a day full of gifts. Some flowers and a nice dinner is totally okay and is very sweet. It's a nice way of saying "Hey, I thought about you extra today." But the emphasis on flowers, chocolate, balloons, teddy bears, jewelry, etc. is a little too much. Valentine's Day is a great time to show your significant other you are thinking of them and care about them. But there is no need to spend $100+ on fancy jewelry just to let your girlfriend know that you care.
5. Lack of knowledge of the holiday
Think about this. What is the history of Valentine's Day? Do you think that most people know how the holiday originated? Approximately 150 million Valentine's Day cards are exchanged each year. The holiday falls behind Christmas at number two for the most popular card sending holiday. And how many people know what it really means?
There are many tales told about the holiday but the most known one would be what the Catholic Church believes in. The legend tells that Emperor Claudius II thought that single men were better soldiers and made marriage illegal for young men. St. Valentine defied Claudius and married young lovers in secret. When he was discovered, his death was ordered by Claudius. Now that you know the history of this holiday, make sure to celebrate this Valentine's Day, alone or with a significant other. Just don't forget to not be annoying and publicly affectionate couple! Happy February.
