1. We don't exactly have it figured out.
What could that be under the tree? A pair of socks? A wireless speaker? Maybe we don't have all the answers in life, but that's okay. We learn by trial error, and we get to know ourselves and others by the journey, not the destination.
2. Not knowing provokes wonder and anticipation.
How boring would life be if we knew exactly what was coming the next day, and the day after that? Although it's sometimes frustrating, I have come to find that not knowing can actually be a source of peace and freedom. We can dream about tomorrow, or ten or twenty years from tomorrow. We can wonder who we'll meet and where we'll be. We can live in today and consider the future with sweet anticipation.
3. We can ruin the surprise if we're impatient.
As a kid, we have all had that temptation to rip open the wrapping paper or look inside the gift bag before Christmas day. Living fully in the present involves being content. Don't try to rush or control what needs to be left alone. Be patient. As gifts are meant to unfold at the right time, as is the present. If it were fully unfolded, we would call it the future.
4. Giving feels better than receiving.
Tis the season for giving, am I right? In the present, be present. Give your time. Give your attention. Give love to those around you, right here and now. Live a life rooted in selfless generosity rather than in self-centeredness. May others see your presence as a gift in their day-to-day schedule.
5. Intentionality makes a world of a difference.
Have you ever received a personal gift? One that fits you so well that you know the giver must have been a close friend or family member? What makes it so special is that the person has been intentional in getting to know your likes, your dislikes, your hopes, your dreams, etc. This feeling of being known and loved can also result from present intentionality with the people you interact with. Have you listened today? Or have you simply been so focused on yourself that you don't truly know anyone else? Be intentional, and you will realize that your world and your perspective will be turned right-side up.
