5 Reasons Your "Premature" Wedding Pinterest Board Isn't Crazy

Ever since I was a little girl I’ve had big dreams and big plans. Whether it was wanting to be Britney Spears or wanting to travel to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory (which we all know totally exists), I have always had big aspirations that are perfectly planned out in my mind. As I’ve gotten older, not much has changed. I still dream big and plan big (although being Britney Spears isn’t exactly my number one goal in life anymore).

I have a habit of looking ahead and planning out my future to a T. I’ve had my dream home drawn up in my mind for years now. And yes, I am guilty of being a typical cliché female by having a fantasy wedding board on my Pinterest. Sue me.

Whether they are willing to admit it or not, most girls have probably obsessed over endless episodes of "Say Yes to the Dress." You’ve probably sat down with your best friend (while eating chocolate or drinking wine) and talked about your dream venue, your ideal ring, your beautiful dress, what food you want served, and every last detail that makes up your big day. I promise you're not alone.

Here are five reasons why you should go all out and embrace your fantasy wedding Pinterest board:

1. To get an idea of what you like.

Weddings are beautiful and fun. What we can’t forget is how overwhelming planning a wedding can truly be once we're on the other side. There are months and months that go into what others only see for a few hours; dresses, cake, venue, pictures, flowers, invitations, food, decorations, etc. If you don’t start getting an idea for what you like and what you dislike, you won’t be able to make an informed decision when the time comes. This is one of the best ways to ensure you know what you want. There really is no harm in starting early.

2. Weddings aren't free (or anything close to free).

Although we tend to envision our day as extravagant, you don’t want to dream too big and be completely disappointed when your ideal venue costs $50,000 and your dream dress costs $15,000 which is way over your budget. Having an idea of what you want as well as having a ballpark estimate of how much you want to spend or how much the dress you love costs is far from crazy. College isn’t cheap and student loans can be a shadow that haunts you. Being informed can help you reach your final goal and keep you realistic.

3. Chances are your significant other is curious.

Guys think about their wedding day too, maybe not as much as females, but they do. They wonder what our female minds have planned out for this day. They might want an idea of what kind of ring you lust after or what color scheme they’re going to have to get comfortable with (they’re just praying it’s not pink). Your significant other seeing your ideals is a great way to see if your visions go together well or if you have some compromises to make before you get hitched.

4. Some of your ideas will change, but some will stay the same.

Trends will change over time. Styles won’t stay the same. Regardless, there are some things that you will always love and want. It is so important to be able to have a visual representation of what you want, so your perfect vision can come to life.

5. Dreaming big is fun. Why limit your imagination?

It is so important not to lose that huge imagination you had when you were young. There is part of all of us that wonders what our happiest day ever will be like. Let’s be honest – big dreams are the best dreams. So what if people think you’re crazy or cliché or it’s way premature? It’s fun to have big dreams and who’s to tell you that you can’t make those come true?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
