This morning I awoke to the sound of bells loudly ringing on my campus. Rather than groaning into my pillow at this annoyance, I leaped out of my bed and shot into the hallway to scream in mutual glee with my housemates.
It was Mountain Day!
Mountain Day is a day each fall at Smith College where all classes are canceled. It is a complete surprise, signaled only at 7 a.m. on the class by the president ringing her bells.
The purpose of Mountain Day is to give students a break from studying and endless, droning lectures, and simply enjoy a crisp autumn day in the beautiful area of New England that is the Pioneer Valley.
Students spend the day in one of the many parks in the area, chilling with little animals at petting zoos and dairy farms, or -- my personal favorite -- apple picking.
Unfortunately, not every college has a Mountain Day. In honor of the students at these accursed institutions, here is a list of five reasons you should take a mental health day this Autumn.
1. You can enjoy the beautiful weather
College students tend to miss the fall season completely. We get our summers off, spring break, and winter break -- but all we get in is a lousy long weekend for Indigenous People's Day. Take a break from classes and roll around in the leaves for a day. Or you could pick apples, pet animals, go kick a ball around in a field -- just try to get out there and enjoy the weather while it lasts.
2. Show off your flannels!
I'm pretty sure 90% of Mountain Day is spent taking insta pics of our best fall clothes. And honestly, I'm pretty okay with that.
3. Eat ALL the Fall Foods (TM)
Autumnal coffee drinks, pumpkin pie, apple pie, apple cider-- all of the stuff you wanted to eat this fall but didn't have the time to try. Today is your food day! And those apple cider donuts will be gone in minutes, so get 'em now!
4. Get caught up on your sleep
Enough said.
5. Get caught up on your work:
In all seriousness, it's great to get some work out of the way -- but don't make that the only thing you do on your day off.
Happy Mountain Day!
