Some people call it the beach, others refer to it as the shore. Whatever you call it, the northeast is lucky to have a line of beautiful beaches along it’s coast.
Each summer my family and I migrate to our beach house in Ocean City, New Jersey to spend our days on the sand and our nights on the boardwalk.
To be honest, I used to dread going down the shore the whole summer and being away from my friends at home. But as I grew older I found a lot more enjoyment in spending my summers as a Jersey girl.
I count down the days all winter long until we return for the best weekend of summer, Memorial Day weekend. We like to call this weekend “MDW”, which also marks the beginning of beach season.
Below are five of my favorite reasons for loving the Jersey Shore. (One thing I can do without though is the beach tags, and getting woken up by beach tag checkers during a nice nap in the sun.) Otherwise, there is nothing better than escaping to South Jersey during the summer months.
1. The Boardwalk - Whether you’re looking for a new OCNJ sweatshirt or a thrill on the double shot, the Boardwalk provides endless amounts of fun after the sun sets. My personal favorite boardwalk activity is mini golf, I take the challenge of getting a hole-in-one seriously.
2. Beach bikes - my main source of transportation down the shore is my pink beach cruiser. The ease of riding through the city on a bike rather than a car is so enjoyable. My sisters and I love to go on bike rides after dinner and watch the sunset back by the bay.
3. The food - Of course food made the list. From Manco & Manco’s, Laura’s Fudge, Monkey Bread, Khor Bros, Brown’s Cider Donuts, Curly Fries and Polish Water Ice, the beach is home to some of the best eats. Every night requires ice cream and we take far too many trips to the boardwalk just to eat our way down it’s three mile length.
4. Outside showers - At the end of the beach day, it’s always a fight over who showers first. To avoid forming a small beach inside our house, we have an outside shower in our shed. There is something so refreshing about washing off all the sunscreen, sand and salt water in this shower.
5.They pump your gas- It is very underrated, but definitely one of the best things about driving in New Jersey. Not only do they pump your gas but gas prices are always significantly cheaper, which makes traveling back and forth from Glen Mills to Ocean City a lot less painful.
