I’m not sure if there is a truely traditional way to spend the Fourth of July. In fact, I would say the way you choose to spend your holiday is the best idea of tradition. But,I know my friends and family have a few favorite ways we choose to celebrate the independence of our magnificent country.
1. Food
It's a given. Who doesn’t love a good grill-out? The Fourth always promises an opportunity to make the great summer foods we look forward to each year. Whether it’s steak, kabobs, or homemade ice cream, like Jessica Day, I think it’s fair to say that we Americans are fans of food, and our country’s birthday gives us an excuse to eat until the grub is gone.
2. Friends & Family
The summer tends to present the possibility to see our friends and family on a more regular basis – this especially holds true for a summer holiday. There is something extremely exciting about getting family and friends together; everything just seems more lively and animated. Now this could be from the six sodas cousin Jenny had or simply because it is great to be reunited. Regardless, what better way to enjoy the peak of summer than with the ones we love?
3. Boating & Beaching
The summer is all about getting some Vitamin D. Naturally, some fun in the sun is vital to a proper celebration! Whether you choose to spend it on the shore of the ocean or on a tube in the middle of the lake, amusement is guaranteed. I am fortunate enough to live on the Missouri River, so you can bet that my friends, family, and I will be sailing the day away. Let’s hope there’s a light breeze!
4. Fireworks
Ah, the most infamous event of Independence Day – fireworks.
Lucky for us, these explosive devices also give us a chance to feel like Jay Gatsby, which is incredibly thrilling. Thanks to the Chinese (shocker), we can shoot them off at our expense to celebrate the freedom of America. Firework displays are often a common event that cities and towns host to entertain the local citizens around the area.
As a kid, I remember the firework show being the most exciting part of the whole day. I mean, come on, fireworks are a pretty luxurious commodity!
5. A Birthday Celebration
And finally, the most important and significant reason the Fourth of July is the greatest day of summer – the birthday celebration. We commemorate the work of the founding fathers as they declared our independence on July 4, 1776. We should all be as excited as Andy Dwyer, as it was a pretty incredible feat!
The Fourth of July is my favorite holiday for the reasons above and many more.
Have a feast, enjoy some quality bonding, catch some rays, embrace your inner Gatsby, and celebrate – we have much to rejoice!
God Bless America!
