People ask me some of the most obscure questions about my career as a radio DJ. For example, why do something there's no money in? Don't I feel weird talking to myself? And why be playing bands rather than being in a band? The truth is, being a DJ is my calling. I have always loved music, but I don't possess a talent in that. I'll leave guitar playing and singing to the experts. Finding a career with money guaranteed is both impossible and not what life is about. I am passionate about what I do, and here are five reasons why.
1. I get to hear the best music first
I am constantly researching new artists. I've even been sought out by great artists in the last year. It's a treat to a music fan to hear incredible metal and rock music.
2. I can dance and sing without being laughed at
On any given day, you can catch me rockin' out and belting out the lyrics to an Avenged Sevenfold or Marilyn Manson song. Being alone in a studio, no one is there to make fun of my odd behavior.
3. The hours are great
I spend two hours playing songs I enjoy to an audience of great people. What could be better than that? Sure, I'm volunteering, but it's the best two hours of my week.
4. I make people happy
I hear from friends, family and new fans often that I helped them find their new favorite song, that they enjoyed my commentary and that listening to my show is a lot of fun. I'm proud of that, and it brings home what I love to do.
5. I'm learning every day
Being in college radio is teaching me so much. I'm learning how to use equipment, speaking skills, advertising skills and programming skills, just to name a few. I've been given endless knowledge in my field by my fellow club mates. And for that, I am extremely thankful.
I may be graduating in May, but I will never forget all of the fun I am having as a college radio DJ. If my career is anything like this, I know I will love what I do until the day I retire.
