Tis' the season for resolutions as we prepare to ring in the new year. Every year, people spend time making lists of things that they want to change about themselves in the coming year. Statistically, these goals are never actually attained and are only actively sought after for a couple of weeks at most. We lead busy lives and often forget about the list of changes we were trying to make our lives. Making goals for change is a good thing, but does it need to be held off until the first day of the year? Why can't we make goals for our lives any other day of the year? New Years is a great day to celebrate, so let's not bog it down with trying to list things that we don't like about ourselves. If we are not careful, this simple celebration could quickly turn into a self-esteem drainer. So in honor of resolution making being right around the corner:
Here is a list of five reasons why I am not making New Years resolutions.
1. I am a perfectionist, it will take forever for me to come up with what I feel is an ideal list of goals. It would probably be March before I have the faintest idea of what I want to do.I don't want to spend half a year coming up with ideas for change.
2. Resolutions are typically the same every year-lose ten pounds, workout more often, travel, eat better-you catch my drift.
3. I will probably forget my resolutions a week into committing to them. This would result in my feeling really bad about myself-because like I said before, I am a perfectionist.
4. I like going against societal norms. Why not be different?
5. New Years is already upon us and I am still trying to figure out what I want to do for my life in 2015. This year has been filled with so much craziness that I haven't even had time to think about what I could possibly change for the better. 2015 is a blur.
I am not saying resolution making is a bad thing; I am encouraging those who do to take it easy on themselves if they find themselves slipping up. If you do, all the power to you-just be realistic and make sure to give yourself grace. Be proud and embrace who you are as a unique, awesome, and beautiful individual. Don't focus so much on what you want to change in 2017 that you forget to celebrate the new year. It is also important to reflect back on 2016 and all that has happened. Reflect on the memories, good and bad. Enjoy your day with friends and making positive changes that you are comfortable with while keeping the mindset that you are a beautiful creature. Happy New year everyone, stay safe and enjoy yourselves!
